DO NOT RENT FROM SAM!!!!!!!!!!! He told me the day before my trip everything was good to go, and when I went to pick up my car it said his brakes have been broken for a while. I didn’t have a rental car for my trip and he wouldn’t answer his phones or respond to my texts. WORST TURO EXPERIENCE. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME

We arrived at the Turo lot on Thursday at 2:20 pm. Check in went quick and smoothly. The Honda Civic was brought to us a little dusty, but not horribly dirty. We packed our belongings into the car and began down the road. Immediately we noticed that the car was making a loud humming/rumbling sound. We made it about a block down the road and got a call from support telling us that they were sorry, but because of mechanical problems the owner didn’t want us to take the car. I let support know that we were already in the car and down the road, but we could bring it back. Support told us that the owner also had a 2007 Lexus that he would be willing to give us without changing prices, but that the car didn’t have up to date tags and we would need to meet up with him to get the tags if we wanted to drive it. My husband and I were here to explore and sight see so this didn’t seem like a big problem. The attendants then informed us that the car was not on the lot so I had to go back and forth contacting the owner to get scraps of information as to whether or not we were going to receive a car. The owner informed us that the car was coming and that his friend would be bringing it out and it would be there right away. Skip forward about an hour or so and we had been sitting outside at the parking lot while it started sprinkling and in 50 degree weather. Mind you it’s not freezing, but we were coming from Miami. The owner again informed us that the car was very close and that we were getting a great deal for the price we were paying. When the car pulled up the driver apologized, said that all of the cars were being cleaned and that he didn’t know anyone would need it that day. The car was not completely clean. There is sticky residue across the dash on the inside and it is a very obviously old car what with the multiple stains. He let us know that pieces were missing from the door handles, the key didn’t work to unlock the doors sometimes so we might have to take the key completely apart to open the door and that the key detection didn’t always work so we would have to hold the key up to the start engine button before pushing it. We thanked him and packed our belongings in the new car. The car had about a quarter tank of gas in it so we had to fill it right away. At this point we were exhausted with the whole process and just wanting to get into our vacation. We asked the owner to bring the tabs our way because the place that he had asked to meet at was a little over an hour away in Artesia. He told me that he would rather us come to him because it was more convenient at which point I told him that we were here for vacation and we just wanted to get it over with. We ended up driving an hour anyways and met him in willowbrook at a gas station. On the way to the gas station we found that the check engine light was on, the oil was 6,000 miles past due, the steering wheel pulls to the right and the car makes a whirring/squeaking sound which indicates a bearing or a belt needs to be replaced. At this point I was so frustrated that I didn’t even want to get into the list of problems with him so we got the tabs and he asked us to wash it for him and he would reimburse us and he told us to drive it as much as needed and that he would waive the mileage for the inconvenience. We were NOT going to get his car washed because we are here on vacation and are not looking to take more time than already wasted out of our day to fix his car problems for him. We used the car and it got us from place to place without breaking down so we appreciated that as well as the communication from Turo support and the attendants at the lot, but we would not recommend this host and are not sure that we will be using Turo again in the future just because of the amount of trouble that we went through.

Car was good but made loud noises above 50mph

This was my first time using Turo and the service itself is fantastic. My wife and I needed a car for a week and rental car prices were astronomical. We weren’t looking for anything fancy—just a reliable car to get us from place to place. Sam’s Honda Civic looked perfect and had excellent reviews so we booked it. Once I landed, I caught a Lyft to the Turo valet lot and I was immediately reimbursed for the ride. Check-in was easy and quick but they didn’t really provide any instructions in terms of taking photos of the car with the app, which is apparently a thing. I also didn’t think to snap a photo of the odometer because I assumed that was all recorded by Turo. I picked the car up at 9:30 PM. It was dark and I couldn’t really see much of anything inside the car, though I did notice that it smelled strongly of marijuana. The first stop I made was a gas station to fill the tank (I received the car with a little less that a quarter tank and I was told that I could return the car at the same level) and then I drove to the hotel where my wife was already staying. I was immediately struck by the strange handling of the vehicle. It is loud and sounds off somehow. I’m not a mechanic so I can’t pinpoint what was going on but based on what I noticed over the course of the trip, I’d venture to guess that the vehicle was in an accident and suffered some damage that was not or could not be repaired. That first night, it just sounded weird, to the point where I was thinking about what I would do if it broke down. We didn’t get in the car again until the next afternoon and in the day. This was the first time my wife had seen the car and she immediately noticed the smell of marijuana. The light also revealed how dirty the interior of the car was. The vehicle was littered with crumbs, pieces of food and trash. Everything, including the dashboard was coated in a layer of dust and grime. The condition of the car was so bad that we stopped and had the car detailed. Moreover, we discovered an empty canister of marijuana in the center console. I reached out to Sam, informed him of the situation and told him that I ended up having the vehicle cleaned. No response. It was at this point that I realized that the ‘Trip Photos’ feature in Turo is intended to be used to document the vehicle’s condition (as opposed to some kind of stupid social media sharing thing). I went ahead and added photos of the car, including some pictures that I took of the interior before it was cleaned. After getting the car cleaned, things were much better, though the smell of weed remained and it continued to be a rough ride. The first time I took the car above 50 on the interstate, I noticed the sound of something rattling or flapping, which contributed to my theory that the vehicle had somehow been damaged. That being said, the car performed its job and never had any problems. It turned on every time and never sputtered or stalled. Everything worked just fine, as far as I am aware. Other than the cleanliness, communication and the vehicle condition, everything was just fine. I love the Turo service and will definitely be using it again—that being said, I don’t think I’ll be renting any of Sam’s vehicles.
