Everything was pretty much perfect with one big exception: I ran into a problem with a tire.
I want to be clear that I don't blame Tommy for this situation, but it was an issue I wouldn't have had to deal with had I rented from a normal car company. Specifically, the right rear tire started losing air. I took it into a tire shop and they said the valve stem was leaking and replaced it but two days later, it was leaking again at which point they said the valve stem area had been damaged and needed to be replaced.
I have no idea what happened. There is no way I hit a curb (this car is tiny and I'm used to driving my Tesla around which is super-wide)...I just can't imagine any way that I could have damaged the tire in this way, so I don't know why it started leaking. I had the car several days before it started leaking, so again, I'm not suggesting Tommy gave me a car with a bum tire -- not at all. Maybe it was the age of the tire...I don't know, but regardless, the tire leaked and Turo's policy is that the renter has to replace the tire.
I am pretty sure the policy doesn't say you have to replace the tire with a new one -- it probably states something re: "equivalent to the original" I would guess, but given my circumstances I felt pretty trapped having to put a new $140 tire on the car which wasn't a great feeling.
In total, because of timing, i basically couldn't use the car for 5 days of the 30 day trip and had that extra $140 charge to boot. I never really challenged Tommy on it but I think it would have been smart for him to offer to pay a significant portion of the cost of the tire -- unless I'm wrong and these tires were new or something. But again, my issue is more about the failure of Turo in this regard...had this happened with a standard rental car company they would haven't address it.
That said, I'd still highly recommend renting this car if you need a short-term commuter that is well within it's "80 mile" range. It is a nice little car with only a few minor 'quirks' that you will quickly overcome. And Tommy was great -- I work pretty close to him so he even dropped/picked up the car from my office. The car was clean and in good condition. He did his best to help negotiate a more reasonable price on the tire. The only knock would be not pro-rating the cost of the tire...
The time I rented out the car was great once you get used to finding the charging station spots and getting into the routine of charging the vehicle altogether. I used the car to get to and from work as well as miscellaneous errands. Tommy was great and answered any questions I had regarding the Fiat. I must say this car was a fun ride for the short time I had it and will consider renting from again.
I rented Tommy's FIAT for a month and the rental experience was excellent. The cars is simple to operate and accelerates like a sports car. On a 240 Volt charger, the car can finish charging within 4-6hrs. Tommy was easy to work with and the pick up and drop off of the car was hassle free. I will rent again with Tommy the next time I'm in LA.
