The car was very clean and ran great and John was friendly and communicative, and was even flexible with allowing me to pick-up the van the evening before the trip date due to an unforeseen circumstance.
So why the low rating? During our trip, I got minor curb rash on two of the rims. I reported this to John upon noticing it. He told me he would need to get it repaired. I was fine paying for a repair, which I assumed would be a reasonable amount given how minor the scratches were.
However, when I received the claim estimate from Turo I was floored by the claim costs - $2075 plus $150 in fees! A wildly disproportionate charge given the actual and very minor damage. How did the claim end up so inflated? Instead of doing a repair like he said, John opted to REPLACE both rims entirely. When I asked him why he did a replacement instead of a repair, he said Toyota does not sell the plastic rim cover and only sells the rim as a whole part and that the rim cover has a “carbon pattern” that is “not repairable”. In other words, the plastic rim covers on this Toyota Sienna with a special carbon fiber pattern (note: not actual carbon fiber) are neither replaceable hub caps nor repairable metal rims (typically repaired with a refinish/paint).
According to Snapsheet, Turo’s “independent, unbiased and neutral” appraiser, the circumstances of this and the disproportionate costs levied on a guest is somehow “fair”. Anyone who sees the actual damage would agree that replacing the rims given how minor the damage is, is excessive. That Turo doesn’t see a problem with this scenario is why I will not be using Turo again for a car rental.
TLDR: If there’s minor curb rash on these rims the host will likely seek to REPLACE them (at $864 a rim). Yes, it’s his right NOT to accept this kind of common, wear-and-tear type damage as a cost of doing business, but consider that no reputable car rental company would even consider replacing rims for curb rash and levying such excessive charges on a customer. It makes no business sense. I say this as a word of caution to guests considering this particular vehicle and host for their next trip.
I'm glad you found the van clean and appreciated the flexibility. To clarify, Turo doesn’t charge for damage under 3 inches, but the rims were severely damaged from off-road use. The car was also returned very dirty with food left inside and multiple scratches (which we didn’t charge for). We restored the vehicle to like-new condition to ensure safety and quality for future guests.
