The island offers incredible diversity, from the dramatic Haleakala National Park with its otherworldly crater views to the charming historic town of Lahaina with its waterfront restaurants and art galleries. You can explore the famous Road to Hana with its cascading waterfalls and bamboo forests, or visit the sacred Iao Valley State Park. Haleakala National Park offers one of Maui's most unforgettable experiences with its legendary sunrise views from the summit crater. The park features diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforest to desert-like volcanic landscapes. You'll wind through eucalyptus groves and rolling pastures as you ascend the mountain's slopes. The summit provides panoramic views across the island and neighboring islands on clear days. Parking is available at various viewpoints throughout the park, though arriving early is recommended for the best experience. Your rental car ride up the mountain becomes part of the adventure as you transition through different climate zones.
The legendary Road to Hana winds along Maui's northeastern coast through some of the most lush and dramatic scenery in Hawaii. This scenic highway features numerous waterfalls, swimming holes, and overlooks where you can stop to take photos. The route passes through small Hawaiian communities and offers glimpses of traditional island life. You'll encounter narrow bridges, hairpin turns, and stunning coastal vistas along the way. Several roadside fruit stands and local eateries provide opportunities to sample fresh tropical fruits and local specialties.
Iao Valley State Park showcases Maui's lush interior with its iconic Iao Needle, a dramatic volcanic spire rising from the valley floor. The park features well-maintained walking paths that lead to viewpoints overlooking the needle and surrounding rainforest-covered cliffs. This sacred valley holds deep cultural significance in Hawaiian history and offers a peaceful retreat from the coastal areas. The short drive from central Maui takes you through pineapple fields and into the West Maui Mountains. Ample parking is available at the visitor center, and the park provides an excellent introduction to Hawaii's native plants and geological formations. The valley's misty atmosphere and emerald vegetation create a mystical ambiance perfect for photography.
Historic Lahaina combines old Hawaii charm with modern amenities along its picturesque waterfront. This former whaling village features art galleries, restaurants, and shops housed in restored 19th-century buildings. You can stroll along the harbor watching boats come and go, or explore the famous Banyan Tree Park with its massive spreading canopy. The town offers excellent dining options ranging from casual beachside cafes to upscale establishments. Street parking and public lots are available throughout the downtown area, making it easy to explore on foot once you arrive.
Wailea represents Maui's sophisticated side with its world-class resorts, championship golf courses, and pristine beaches. You must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and cannot use handheld mobile devices while driving. All passengers must wear seat belts, and children under 8 years old require appropriate car seats when traveling from Kahului Airport.

Maui has no toll roads, making your drive from Kahului Airport completely free regardless of your destination on the island. All highways and local roads throughout Hawaii operate without tolls, so you can explore from Kahului to any part of Maui without additional fees. This makes budgeting for your car rental straightforward since gas will be your only driving expense beyond the vehicle itself.
Several gas stations operate within a short drive of Kahului Airport, with options available along Haleakala Highway and Dairy Road. You'll find major brand stations offering both regular and premium gasoline for your rental car. Gas prices in Hawaii tend to be higher than mainland U.S. rates, so consider fueling up at stations in Kahului town for potentially better prices than airport-adjacent locations.
The Road to Hana offers Maui's most famous driving experience, featuring waterfalls, bamboo forests, and dramatic coastal scenery accessible from Kahului. Haleakala National Park provides another spectacular route with volcanic landscapes and sunrise viewing opportunities at the summit. The scenic drive along Maui's western coast toward Lahaina showcases beautiful beaches and resort areas perfect for convertible cruising from your Kahului starting point.
