CAUTION!

Electric car mileage varies drastically!

First time experiencing fully electric vehicle, thinking i was gonna save money at the pump.

Turned to be the worst experience renting a car, ended up paying way more than i should have.

Things i learned through my experience:

Actual mileage depends on battery load, the harder your engine draws from the battery the less efficient it will be.

-I lost about 20-40% of battery life equating to about 50-60 miles driving through rough moreno valley winds which was only a stretch of possibly 10 miles

-There is an efficiency gauge in place of the RPMs that kinda works the same, if you stay in the “blue” then you’re getting more efficient or accurate mileage calculations. The problem is that, in order to stay in the blue range you have to drive like a grandma snail, less than 40 miles an hour. Which isnt too bad around the city but a nightmare for fwy or highway driving.

Spent alot of time looking for chargers either functioning or at least compatible with a specific vehicle

-not too bad to deal with around the city but for long distance driving it is terrible. I had to start looking for chargers near me anywhere from 50-100 miles left in charge because you dont really know whats gonna be in range or if they even have working chargers once you get there. Definitely a big risk while crossing the desert. I had to tow the car to the next charging station cause the station that i made it to had reported on the map that there was a charging station but when i got there, no chargers were to be found

-alot of chargers dont work even though they say there are functioning on the app

-charging speeds vary, on my trip i barely made it to the closest charging station that just happened to be the slowest trickle charger which led me to charge for 4 hrs in the middle of nowhere just to get enough mileage (45 miles) to get to the next closest decent charger which then took another 2 hrs to completely charge the battery

-Not all chargers have guest pay, which means you have to jump through hoops by creating accounts and downloading apps and setting up payment arrangements.

I rented this car thinking it would save me a few bucks at the pump but boy was i wrong. For the small savings at the pump i payed with my time and convenience which wasnt worth it at all considering i had to pay an enormous tow fee when i ran out of battery on the highway.

In conclusion, fully electric would probably be beneficial for in town commutes but i would never recommend long distance travel especially through the desert. Possibly a hybrid would have been the better choice that way you can always rely on gas to get you out of a bind but fully electric is a no-go for me now.

A 6 hr drive from long beach to arizona took me roughly 12-14 hrs of hassle with only half the time of actual driving and the other half of sitting around while charging. I didnt not save any money whatsoever, i would have rather spent 10$ a gallon for gas in my own car then to deal with this again.
