  • I never drove an electric car. How can I charge the car at tesla superchargers?

If this is your first time with a Tesla, congrats! The FREE charging will save you a ton on gas. The supercharger network gets you from SLC to Yellowstone with just a couple of stops. Simply add your destination to the 17in center touch screen and if you need charge to reach your destination, it will send you on a route to the superchargers to get you there. At the charge station, you just back in to the spot, grab the charger and push the button on the tesla charger and it will open the charge flap by the back left taillight. Then just plug it in and watch the light turn green. Average charge time is 30-45 minutes so it is perfect to grab a bite and stretch your legs. Or you can play some of the games on the entertainment menu on the main screen.

  • How can I charge using j1772 universal stations?

Many hotels, businesses, and downtown parking have universal ev charging for free or a small fee. Simply use the center touch screen lightening button to get to the charging menu and open or unlock the charge port. Then use the included adaptor to connect the charger. Don’t forget to grab the adaptor and close the charge port once you are finished. Charging outside of the supercharger network takes longer so it is useful for overnight parking to get a full charge or small range increases while you are eating or shopping somewhere. Some of the free/paid spots require a ChargePoint app on your phone.

  • Can I charge at an RV campsite?

Yes! I have included the NEMA 14-50 adaptor. Simply call ahead to your RV campground and check that they have the plug that you will need. They may refer to it as 1450 or 50amp.

  • How good is the range?

Up to 200 miles or more on a single charge, although I typically suggest charging every 100 or 150 miles. Range depends on many factors, mostly how you drive the car and if you are going uphill or downhill. In order to not get stuck, I will always plan to reach my charging destination with 15% charge remaining. This gives you some wiggle room in case you are driving faster (creates more drag) or in cold climate. Please note that if the battery is getting low and it is cold outside, stopping the car and allowing it to cool down could further reduce range. If you have an emergency, there is a 110v charge adaptor in the car. This charges the car very slowly but can plug in at almost any gas station. See the other FAQ for better fast charge options.

  • What about roadside assistance?

Unless you completely deplete the battery, this car is fully under drivetrain warranty and should not give you any issues at all. Let me know if you have any concerns on your trip. If towing, Flatbed towing only, no rolling tows.

  • Can I use autopilot?

Autopilot (beta) is an amazing convenience and safety feature that was first introduced with the 2015 model S. You should be aware of a few things if you want to try it out. 1) You are legally and financially responsible for controlling the vehicle at all times. 2) This autopilot system can NOT stop for stop signs or stop lights and should really only be used on highways. 3) This system works best when road lines are very clear. Lane shifts, construction cones, and wet or highly reflective conditions can cause the car to miss the appropriate lane markings. 4) When cresting a hill, the autopilot system may swerve trying to find the lane. 5) At all times you must keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road and be ready to take over.
