I would like to report a very challenging experience with a Turo host who did not honor their commitment to customer service standards and car quality standards.  On the way to returning my car today, I messaged the host Ray  to tell him I was running 15min late to gas car. I own a Mazda Miata, I know how to operate the car. So when the gas lid would not open, I was Confused. I tried 3 times, it would not open. I have on video of me trying to open the gas lid and it not popping open.  I text and then call the host immediately about the problem. He tells me on the phone to use a tool to open the lid and that he had an issue with this before. I was shocked. Why is he listing a damaged car on Turo? I asked him  why he did not add the broken gas lid to the car description? He did not have an answer.  He is falsely advertising a damaged vehicle on Turo and charging a lot for it. This is deceptive  business practice. He then also showed up late to the check out time.  He tries to open the gas lid and can not. I have a picture of him touching it and holding a tiny tool to use to open lid. He then finally gets the lid open. I refuse to pay for gas and now I would like my money back for being deceived about a car that is actually damaged.  He then admits in messenger that the previous driver damaged the gas lid. It is his responsibility to inspect the car for all damages before he lists the car on Turo or rents to the next customer.  The fact that he tried to squeeze more Money out of me and pretend that the gas lid isn’t broken is unacceptable behavior. How many other customers has he taken advantage? Not everyone has the courage to report bad behavior but I do.  This Turo host needs to be disciplined  and reprimanded for his terrible customer service. Because of him, I was late for work, mentally and emotionally disturbed by his neglect of taking care of his car and caring for customers.  This car should not be on Turo, you also have to keep turning engine off and on to get it to stop beeping. This he at least told me about at pick up but did not list in car description but I am sure there are other issues with this car.   Please let me know how I can get this matter resolved and even get my money back. I would not have rented this car if I knew it was damaged.

Ray's response

This gas cover had trouble to open one time before due to guest pressed down to much power, I need to used a tool to pry it open and adjust the latch angle a bit to release that cover properly; I offered my apology for this inconvenience for her and I refueled the gas for her instead, not sure why she didn’t want to pay me for this refueling service?

Awesome guy. Great car. Both exceeded my expectations. Will only rent Turo with this guy. And this car. The car has cold AC , handles great, easy parking. Perfect for Waikiki. Enough trunk for two. Awesome to drive along the shore line roads top down. Few cars offer so much for a week or so trip on an island. And drove all over the island for almost a week. And it still had more than a half tank. I now notice these cars on the road now.

Ray was lovely and easy to communicate with. He let us pick up the car a bit early and was super helpful. Ray is 5 stars. That said, this car has seen better days: Sun visor held up with duct tape that then melts in the sun and falls every 5 minutes while driving; Deep scratches throughout the plastic parts of the car; generally dirty/grimy. Wish I hadn’t prepaid for cleaning. Not worth the exorbitant price I paid.

I had an amazing experience of driving around the island with this super cool car! Everything worked well and Ray is very friendly and was very responsive to all my requests! I highly recommend renting this car to everyone who wants to have a great experience while in paradise!

Car is in excellent condition and responsive. We reserved it early well in advance of the July 4th weekends as it was tough to find affordable rental car for that week. AC is strong and cold — you’d need it for the hot Hawaiian summer. Trunk space is a tad small and there’s minor tape on the right sun visors. It comes with the cable which you can charge/ plug to your iPhone and switch the FM to 88.9 to play your own songs. Sometimes it got some noise interference from neighboring radio wave. Other than that we love the hard top convertibles. And the Miata is pretty stable even at high speed on the highway. With the smaller size, street parking is easy enough to find.
