When I received the car I noticed it was old but figured it was ok, some dashboard warning lights came on briefly but went away. I documented this (photos of both it coming on right away and going away) then didn’t use the car much due to the tropical storm Eta. Joe’s mother writes me a text asking me to take the car to their service center when I am done with it (this will become important later).

Nearing the end of the first long drive with the car dashboard lights came on, and I informed the hosts. They wanted me to continue to bring the car back to them anyway as I was far away but I insisted that I didn’t think their car was safe. Long story short, the mechanic that they had inspect on the car said the car had many longstanding issues, and that the initial oil problem I suspected was the least of it, bald tires about to fall apart, oil level, and the transmission was getting stuck in second gear and revving up the engine too much etc etc! The hosts still insisted on having me drive back but I just wanted it towed and thought it was not safe to drive. I spent hours on the phone trying to call Turo but the only live calls they take on their main number are for the separate towing service they contract for roadside assistance and can’t resolve such issues with hosts. The roadside assistance team can only tow the vehicle if the host gives them a location to take it to and the hosts were insisting I keep driving this deathtrap. The mechanics at the service center told me they were trying to keep me out of it as it was obviously just a poorly-cared for car. This is a verbatim quote from the mechanic “I kept telling the lady that it’s her car. That you were a gentleman for noticing that it needed maintenance and that it’s a fine car it just needed to be taken care of.” I spent the night at the location and started connecting the dots. First of all Joe had been mentioning his belief that I had just bought a “new car” (figures I have money) and then I remembered that his mom had requested I bring the car for service *before* I noticed anything wrong with it (i.e. they knew it needed maintenance). I also found an old review for Joe where the reviewer says “the transmission was revving up too high when shifting” (see Joe’s review from Oct 17 prior to my trip). This is the exact problem the mechanic diagnosed.

I began to think I was going to be scammed and today my fears are confirmed as they are trying to claim I damaged their car.
