Very fun and comfortable car to drive. Ryan gave me be an excellent introduction to how the Tesla operates and support throughout my trip. Highly recommended!
Pickup went super-smoothly: Daniel met me on time at College Park Metro Station where I inspected the Mini and everything was cool. I love the bright orange exterior color and the interior aircraft-style toggle switches are awesome! The car was like new except for some curb rash on one rim, which Daniel pointed out to me during our walkaround. I'd always wanted to rent a Mini Cooper, as the last time I was in a Mini was way back in the 1970s/1980s (when they were really mini!), partly as an homage to one of my all-time favorite movies: The Italian Job (the original). My first few hours with the Mini were less than ideal - I couldn't get comfy in the driver's seat (I'm 5ft10in & 240 lbs) - but the Mini was eager to please: super easy to park (rear backup camera & parking sensors), very easy to maneuver, and - dare I say it - pretty fun to drive, with a turbocharged engine that made driving fun. I fit a lot of stuff into it as I was visiting my family for 3 weeks, and although it took a couple of days, I eventually managed to get comfy in the driver's seat and really enjoyed my time driving it. The stereo was great, although using the entertainment/media system takes some getting used to. It was easy to connect multiple smartphones via Bluetooth. I LOVED the interior "disco" lights that changed colors. The ultimate party trick is the "MINI" projector from the driver's door handle -- that blew my family away as being completely over the top (yet super cool). Note: I plugged in a USB flash/thumb drive to listen to some audio books but some of the tracks were not detected. Not sure if this was a playback issue or a faulty USB drive. Minor downsides: there is no built-in GPS as this is the 2019 Signature model (one up from base-spec). There is no USB charging port for the back seats. Seat adjustment is done manually. Room in the trunk is limited, and although the rear seats fold down to yield extra storage room, this is not an SUV, so pack lightly and efficiently. Cruise control worked great, although small increments were tricky to adjust. It takes premium gas, although not much as the tank is only 12 gallons small if you completely empty it, as I did on many occasions. The carpets were hard to clean if you have pets (we never put the pets in the car but pet hair did end up in there that was really hard to clean when I returned it). Major Issues: the only "major" issue I had happened once: I locked the car while walking into a store and when I walked back out a few minutes later, the key fob was dead, so I couldn't use it to unlock or start the car. Luckily, I knew how to: (1) extract the metal key from the key fob: press the small button and slide it out, (2) insert the metal key under the driver's door handle, (3) pop off the trim piece, (4) insert the metal key into the lock and unlock it. I did all this in under a minute...and then I got stuck! Where does the metal key go to start the car??? YouTube didn't help me but a friendly soul managed to find the answer on YouTube as I was freaking out given that I was late to dinner with my bosses: hold the key fob next to the steering column (where you would expect the ignition key to go) and then you can start the car! Apparently there is a chip in the key fob! This only happened once, and a few hours later, it resolved itself. Weird! I averaged about 35 mpg (highway driving) because the car shifts gears up immediately, keeping the car in the highest gear possible unless you either bury the gas pedal or switch to manual gear mode (which I never did as it was not needed). City/mixed driving was closer to 30 mpg. The engine has an auto Start/Stop shut-off feature (which you can easily disable) which saves gas by switching the engine off when the car is stopped, although if you have the A/C on the lowest setting then the engine will stay on. Dual moonroofs made the interior feel larger than it is, and although I spent some time in the back seat, it was bearable only for short trips, after which I felt way too cramped, although my kids did not complain at all. My best gas consumption (I love playing this game!) was 36.6mpg @ 43.5mph average speed, and it cost $30 to tank it up with exactly 12 gallons of premium (91/93) octane gas -- DON'T use "cheap" (87) gas as the car's performance will suffer, with clumsy acceleration (my wife made this mistake once). On my trip back I managed 34.3mpg @ 75.3mph on the highway! Final thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed this (BMW-engineered) Mini and I'd love to drive a top-of-the-line Mini Countryman All4 sometime! Daniel was awesome and I recommend him and his bright orange Mini Cooper unreservedly!
This was a great experience to try out a Performance Model 3! Ryan was very friendly and helpful
