Faqs

  • Should I leave my Tesla plugged in while I am on a trip?

If you leave your car for an extended period of time, like when on a trip, plug it in to prevent normal range loss. This will also ensure that you return to a fully charged car. Your car is safe to leave plugged in for any length of time and due to advanced diagnostics, is smart enough to protect itself from overcharging.

  • What if I didn’t bring my charge cable and adapters with me?

Tesla Superchargers and Destination chargers in the Tesla network have all the equipment you need to charge.

  • What do the colors mean around the charge port?

. White: The charge port door is open. Your car is ready to charge, but the connector is not inserted, or the latch is released and the connector is ready to be removed. . Blue: Your car detects that a connector has been plugged in. . Blinking Blue: Your car is communicating with the connector. Either it is preparing to charge, or a charging session is scheduled to begin at a specified future time. . Blinking Green: Charging is in progress. As your car approaches a full charge, the frequency of the blinking slows. . Solid Green: Charging is complete. . Solid Amber: The connector is not fully plugged in. Realign the connector to the charge port and insert fully. . Blinking Amber: Your car is charging at a reduced current (AC charging only). . Red: A fault is detected and charging has stopped. Check the instrument panel or touchscreen for a fault message.

  • How fast can I charge?

At home or wherever you usually park, the Tesla Wall Connector can provide up to 44 miles of range per hour of charge, depending on the car and how much power you provide to the Wall Connector. When on the road, Tesla Superchargers provide the fastest possible charging speed. When using Trip Planner, the vehicle will tell you exactly how long to charge before continuing on your journey. On average, drivers Supercharge for about 30 minutes before driving on.

  • What if I run out of range and can't make it to a charging station?

Enter your destination into Navigation to allow Trip Planner to generate your route, charging stops and the recommended charge times, to ensure you reach your destination. The Supercharger support page has information about Supercharging rates when on the road. If you do run out of range, contact Tesla Roadside Assistance and we can provide transport (at your cost) to the nearest charging station.
