Overall: David Harris borrows my car and doesn't return the car on time or with gas. He leaves the car illegally parked and leaves with my car keys in his pocket. I run after him to get them. Turo nightmare.
The reservation: David picks up my car asking me to meet him at L'Ephant plaza which is in NW miles from the pick-up spot. Weird. Half way through the reservation I check in with him to see how things are going. I want this to work for all my renters and I do this for every rental. When I do this, David emails "everything is fine". I brief him on the late fees options--"Turo charges for every half hour you are late OR, I accept an extension online, OR people can pay extra in cash if they need more time OR you can leave extra gas". Lots of options here. I am very flexible". Doing NOTHING is a recipe for late fees.
When he returns 45 minutes late I ask "how did it go". He says "he couldn't fit what he needs to fit". I am perplexed because that is not what he said by text and with Pick-ups you either put what you need in the truck bed, on top of the truck, or you take the canopy off. It's really easy. I was also perplexed because he never mentioned he had any trouble. I asked him why he didn't communicate this problem when I asked him by text and he didn't have an answer.
I offered a refund anyway. However, David left the mattress receipt in my car BUT it had a time stamp of when the car was due back. Feeling scammed, I called him and asked him to explain his side of the story-- because I really do give everyone, including David, benefit of the doubt. I really don't have time to do this though--the truck rental is really cheap and doesn't pay for this kind of communication. Regardless, he doesn't have a good response just a bunch of excuses, so I rescind the refund offer and tell him "in light of the receipt but for your trouble I'll give you a free hour to complete your trip IF you return the gas you use and pay for the extra time used sans late fee". I think this is fair and he agrees. However, I never hear from him until he needs the receipt. When he needs it (presumably to get the mattress), I tell him to come "anytime on Monday after 10:30 to pick it up". I never hear from him AND he never shows up for it. Subsequently, I report the lateness and lack of gas to Turo. Only after he got dings with late fees and for not filling up the tank does he complain. He had plenty of options and I went the extra distance to work with him. He only rented the car for 1.5 hours ($12!) but used $8 in gas and returned the car 45 minutes late!
Message to David: In your email you state "you decline to pay the late fee". You choosing to not pay for gas or time is not any of the options presented period for you or any renter on Turo. This not a free car rental service. I spent a lot of time communicating with you which is not the business model of Turo. When you borrow someone's personal property for hire--you have to pay for it. When you get caught lying be honest about it. Making up a story that doesn't match the reality waste's everyone's time. I honestly feel badly for you. I wish you luck.
Regarding David's suggestion to "just buy a car for $2K like he did", David told me his car was dead and needed to be jumped and that is why he had to rent my car in the first place! Good luck with that car buying option David!
