After contacting the owner at 10:45 am this morning by text to report a mechanical problem with his 2013 BMX that I rented, the owner responded promptly, apologized, reflected on some recent work performed on the car, then offered another vehicle for my use. He asked if I could Uber myself from Austin to Georgetown to pick up the substitute car from his house, because he would have to have my rental towed. I politely suggested he bring it to me and to pay for an Uber to get me home. He agreed initially but after talking to his wife (??) he changed our agreement and asked that I wait at the gas station. Once on site, 25 min later, he asked me to process a trip change in TURO. I was asked by the Owner to “cancel the current trip”. After reporting the mechanical problem, I inadvertently keyed in the TURO app the wrong cancellation date, He rejected this error on his end. Then I re-keyed the cancel date for today (when it really should have been for yesterday, since I did get to use it per the TURO scheduled trip) the second time around. At this point, the owner requested again that I not report to TURO that the cancellation was due to vehicle mechanical problems. I asked him why would I do it? He said because it takes TURO all day to process things... I guess I took his word for it. I should not have because the truth is the car exhibited mechanical problems in which I observed an odorous white smoke that began emitting from under the hood of the car after only driving about 3 miles this morning. I was headed to my dentist appointment which I ultimately had to cancel at the last minute (at a cost) to me. The owner (Steven) agreed to deliver a substitute vehicle for me, but after waiting at the gas station for well over 1/2 hour, and after missing my dentist appointment, I was then informed by the owner that I had to book a new trip AND.. for the substitute vehicle it would require I pay him a higher per day cost for it. I was speechless! Incredible!! Who does that??? After expressing great dissatisfaction about the unfairness of this request and pointing out to him (the obvious)— that the customer (me) should not be required to PAY FOR BEING INCONVENIENCED, and that I certainly would not pay him any additional amount for a trip already paid for (in good faith that I would have the use of a safe and operable 2013 BMW); by now it had been well over an hour that I’m still stranded in the heat at a gas station. At this point, I walked away feeling faint from the heat, in stark disbelief and great anguish!! After sitting on the ground under a tree at the gas station, too anguished to think, the owner now shifting his focus and concern for his inoperable vehicle — on getting it towed that is, he offered to Uber me home! I told him, that would be nice (I can’t say what I really thought at this point—I just wanted to go home). He shifted his attention back to the tow truck driver. I should have known this was a game, another bait and switch. Believe it or not he came over to me (at this point I’m sitting on the curb closer to other people)— he came and stood over me, told me to call Uber myself, then handed me a $20, then another $2O. and walked away with absolutely no concern or compassion for me. I was speechless!! I’ve never been treated by any legitimate business or caring person in this insensitive way!! He walked away. Some minutes later, I guess perhaps a flicker of guilt (certainly not compassion or reason) entered into the owner’s mind—as He glanced over at me sitting on the curb, in the heat STRANDED perhaps because the tow truck driver inquired with compassion about me? I don’t know. Thinking back, I remember the tow truck driver walking up and then by me. He spoke. I acknowledged him. I did not know at the time he was concerned about my welfare. Not really sure, but after this point, the BMW owner gets into his substitute car, starts to drive off, but in afterthought he halts the car on his way out of the parking lot, rolls his window down then faintly offers me a ride home?? Really?. Wow! I mustered up enough strength to get up and walk over to him and let him know— “Sir, what you’ve done to me is unconscionable. I just want you to know I would NEVER treat you or anyone else’s the way you treated me.” He muttered something incomprehensible and drove off. (Let’s see— I paid this man in advance to rent working and safe 2013 BMW from Aug 14th-28th including today!! I canceled the trip in the TURO system, at his request due to recurrent mechanical problems, but at the end of all of this— I’m left in the hole— no car and scheduled, as contracted. Not only didn’t I get to use the car (at $32/day) though paid, nor did I receive the promised substitute for my inconvenience, but I was left stranded on a curb at a gas station alone. I pray that my credit card is not double charged or charged one penny over the services rendered, and I pray that this nightmare does not happen to any other trusting individual.
