Description

For city dwellers who feel the need to occasionally get out of the city, the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser will take them wherever they want to go. Offering lots of style and substance, the FJ Cruiser hearkens back to an icon. From 1961 to 1965, the FJ40 Land Cruiser was Toyota's best-selling model in the U.S., so it's no surprise the brand decided to resurrect the FJ name in 2005. Although the FJ Cruiser shares its platform with the Toyota 4Runner, it has its own unique appearance that speaks to the FJ Cruisers of yesteryear with an upright square design language, round headlights, white rooftop, spare tire mounted on the back, and rear wraparound windows. The Toyota FJ's interior also reflects much of the same character of old FJs with optional body-colored door panel inserts, water resistant cloth seats, and rubberized floor mats. The five-passenger SUV has four doors, with half-sized rear-hinged doors providing access to the two rear passengers. Powered by a 4.0-liter V-6 that puts out 260 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, the FJ is available with three drivetrains that cover the needs of all types of off-roaders (or non-off-roaders). Serious adventurers will opt for the full time four-wheel-drive system that comes with a six-speed manual and locking rear differential. For soft-roaders, a part-time four-wheel drive system comes with five-speed automatic. For those who just like to live dangerously on paved roads, the FJ comes standard with rear-wheel drive and five-speed automatic.

I had the pleasure of renting this truck for a weekend in Vancouver. For the uninitiated, the FJ Cruiser is a legendary off-road SUV that is every bit as capable as it's butch styling would suggest. These trucks are incredibly sought after and long-lived. I was initially hesitant because there was a single picture and stock description of the car. I took a chance and I am SO glad I did! Maryam is clearly a passionate owner who takes pride in the details. The truck was spotless when I picked it up, and the process could not have gone smoother! Also, this FJ is probably one of the cleanest examples you will find on the road today. This truck always put a smile on our faces throughout the trip. It was easy to drive and the stereo is surprisingly good with the subwoofer. I really appreciated the parking sensors and rear camera. Keep in mind that the rear seats can get a bit tight for adults on longer trips, and it is not exactly a Prius when it comes to fuel economy. In conclusion, every aspect of this renting experience went flawlessly! I am in love with this orange beauty and will surely be renting it whenever I find myself in Vancouver!
