AVOID THIS VEHICLE & RENTER AT ALL COST!! (You’ll regret it if you don’t.) Where to even begin... First, this car was pretty dirty inside and out and the check engine light was on when I first got it, however, there was no one present for me to point it out to when I took possession of it, so I just took pictures. As far as overall comfort and amenities this car was far below what I would consider even basic stock. Although the listing stated it had an ‘Aux’ and ‘USB’ port the ‘Aux’ was nonexistent, and the ‘USB’ consisted of a plug adaptor in the car’s only cigarette lighter. This would have been doable except that once you hit the highway the car violently shakes and every 10-15 minutes or so the continual vibrations knock the whole adaptor out and you have to plug it back in again, and the mirrors had to be readjusted every 30-45 minutes. However, the violent shaking steering wheel which quickly made your hands go numb was the most uncomfortable part. The absolute worst part of this car was that it was entirely unsafe to drive and legitimately had me in fear of our lives or at the very least causing a major multiple car accident on several occasions. While it seemed to do better at lower speeds, once you got on the Texas highway and eventually painfully climbed your way up to 50-60 mph the whole car incessantly aggressively vibrated, especially the steering wheel. We continued on the highway for another 30 minutes and out of nowhere the RPMs plummeted to zero, various dashboard lights flickered (oil, check engine - already on since the beginning of the trip, battery, tire pressure, etc…) and we quickly began to decelerate despite pushing on the gas. We were lucky to make it over to the shoulder and attempted to restart the vehicle, but the engine refused to turn over so the car wouldn’t start. After giving it a 5-minute rest, we tried it again and this time the engine turned over but once again the car wouldn’t actually start. A few minutes later we were finally able to get the car to work and we continued on our way hoping it was just a fluke but having no other option except to keep going since we were closer to Austin than Houston at this point. Not 10 minutes later the exact same thing happened, once again we were lucky to not get hit from going 65-0 in just a few seconds. After this occurred twice more now at 5 to 6 minute intervals, I contacted Georges (the owner) on the phone, and he asked if I had filled up the car with gas yet. I told him I topped it off before leaving since there were long stretches of highway without any stops. He then asked what gasoline I used, and I told him I used mid-grade. He said I should have used premium instead of mid-grade because it was a 'Mercedes engine' and mentioned this had happened before and that it was listed on the TURO listing online but most people just don’t pay attention to it (thus suggesting the situation was somehow my fault). He offered no explanation as to why the steering column ceaselessly violently vibrated when going over 55 mpg. I told him I read the entire listing before renting, and using premium only wasn’t anywhere on there. I checked later to verify, and I was right, it definitely wasn’t on the vehicle profile but I suggested he add it for future patrons especially if this had already happened. I also quickly checked the gas type and everything I found including the President of Smart Car said it will definitely run on low-grade just fine, but for the best mileage premium was recommended. I own a BMW that also recommends premium yet the few times it was filled with mid or regular, the car didn't completely shut itself down. Something that significant would only have happened if you were to mix up diesel and unleaded. The advice I received was to continue driving to empty the tank and then fill it with premium. To me, this answer was woefully inadequate considering the tank was ¾ full, it supposedly gets 40 mpg, and on top of that, while going 70 mph on the highway I would be forced to dangerously maneuver the car to the shoulder (which was not always there) at 5-minute intervals because it inexplicably lost all acceleration. Having no other option than to be stranded somewhere on the highway between Houston and Austin and because the sun would be setting soon we continued on but ended up having to pull over every 6-7 minutes, wait for 3-4 minutes, and then continue on 17 TIMES before finally arriving in Austin! Upon our arrival I called the Georges, and his only offer given the situation was to cancel my remaining rental days and then have me leave it in Austin. NO apology was even offered for the outrageous amount of time, energy, and stress we spent dealing with what is obviously a completely unusable vehicle. Not to mention how unbelievably unsafe the whole trip was as we could easily have gotten into an accident each and every time we had to pull over with the transmission stalling every handful of minutes. His option would have left us stranded in Austin to find our own way to continue on our trip - which still included non-refundable hotel arrangements and various attraction tickets in both Houston, San Antonio, and Galveston. We looked into other rental options and the minimum base charge for renting a car in Austin and returning it in Houston alone was $250; or around $450 including the rental itself. While admittedly Georges thankfully was responsive when I attempted to contact him, he wasn’t the least bit helpful. He didn’t follow up with me to ask how the vehicle was doing, and his only remedy was entirely unacceptable. He didn’t even offer to refund any of the money we had already paid for the few days we had had it despite it being entirely his responsibility the vehicle didn’t work, and we currently found ourselves in this frustrating situation. Honestly, it isn't even about the money. An effortless acknowledgment of how miserable our situation was instead of insinuating it was somehow my fault the car has some serious mechanical issues, would have at the very least let me know he empathized with our current circumstances. A simple apology goes a LONG WAY...

If all car rentals could be this convenient and enjoyable. What a treat to rent this Smart car. Easy to maneuver through city streets, comfortable driver seat in such a small space. Good communication with the car owner through voice or text. Will definitely rent again the next time in Houston.
