Guidelines

THE GOLDEN CAR RULE: Please return the car in the condition in which you received it: clean and washed, undamaged, smelling good, and with a full tank of gas. In other words, treat our car as if it were your friend’s ride. :) If you’d like to purchase any optional services such as our cleaning or gas-up service, you can do so at any time prior to your trip. We’re happy to make your trip as convenient as you need! GENERAL USE: ⛽️ Use Premium/Supreme gasoline only (91 octane or higher). If the nozzle is green, it’s diesel, putting it in the car will severely damage it.  🚬 NO SMOKING of any kind. Vaping & marijuana use are also prohibited. (See ‘Damage, Loss, & Fines’ below for more info) 🐕 🐈‍⬛ NO PETS to be in the car at any time. (See ‘Damage, Loss, & Fines’ below for more info) 🧴 ☀️ Watch the SUNSCREEN, which causes staining on the seats of the car. (See ‘Damage, Loss, & Fines’ below for more info) 🏝 SAND is super messy! Upon returning from the beach, please make necessary use of the public showers available to ensure you are not bringing undo sand into the vehicle. It gets on everything, takes forever to clean out, scratches windows and screens, and jams instrument clusters. (See ‘Damage, Loss, & Fines’ below for more info) 🪨 NO OFF-ROADING allowed; stay only on well-paved roads. (See ‘Special Considerations’) 🚢 When PARKING please put the vehicle in a spot where someone will not ding it by an arrant door swinging open (it happens frequently here in Maui). The afternoon wind often “grabs” doors and causes it to go wide. 🥷🏻 THEFT happens here on Maui; often more to tourists than locals. Please keep all valuables out of sight, utilize the trunk space, and choose well-lit places to park. In general, the more out in the open you park, the better. Caution and situational awareness are key here on the island; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: If you travel to HANA, KAHAKULOA, KAUPO, or other remote areas on the island: 1) While we don’t expect any issues with our car, in case of mechanical breakdowns, you assume ALL RESPONSIBILITY and agree to fully pay additional costs of towing the vehicle back to the service facility, dealer, or tow facility. Towing from remote parts of the island is extremely expensive. Please weigh carefully as you explore the more remote parts of Maui. 2) Please be courteous and aware of local residents traveling to/from these remote areas. Friendliness is paramount; pull over and kindly let them pass. They will appreciate your gesture of aloha and allow you to more leisurely enjoy your journey. 3) It is respectful/expected to honk for safety as you go around blind corners to alert oncoming cars of your approach. 4) Please do not drive the back road past Hana; turn back at milepost 41 (near the Seven Sacred Pools) when venturing through Hana. The road is rough on that side and this Lexus has beautifully low clearance; damage will most likely occur to the underside of the car.  Instead, drive through Kula to Kaupo and enjoy the arid, spacious mountain and ocean views as well as newly paved road. Turn back as soon as the road turns to paved cobblestone and/or into many potholes. DAMAGE, LOSS, & FINES (BY MAKING A RESERVATION OF OUR VEHICLE YOU ARE AGREEING TO THESE TERMS): Stuff happens, most of the stuff which would happen to the car you rent is covered by Turo, but for the stuff which isn’t, we need to know you’re going to make it right. We’re not some big rental company; we’re just a family here on Maui trying to survive like most folks out there. That being said, we depend on our couple cars to bring in part of our monthly income to pay the rent, bills, etc. As you will surely know sooner than later, things don’t move super fast here on-island and are, in general, pretty expensive if they’re not a freebie. If there is damage to our car, it always costs more and takes longer to get done than on the mainland; parts and supplies have to be literally shipped in. We’ve used some harder language (below) to detail potential costs if things on your trip go awry; we have this in place to cover ourselves. In general, we're happy to work with you and help you help us fix any problem which may pop up.  Smart KEY/FOB REPLACEMENT (due to damage or loss) is $500. A wet/water-damaged key will be considered to be in-need of a replacement.  Smoke damage, pet hair or damage, unknown/unidentifiable offensive odors, sunscreen/oil stains, and/or moderate to excessive sand will be subject to additional cleaning fees of $500.  Any and all traffic infractions, unpaid parking tickets, and/or other violations which require our time to resolve on your behalf will subject you to a fee of $125 per hour spent by us, rounded up to the nearest hour. Please pay your tickets and fines as soon as possible. By making a reservation you are agreeing, in good faith, to make us aware of any potential car related infractions during your trip AND to resolve all said infractions as soon as possible. Please save any citations and upload them into the ‘Trip Photos’ of the Turo App.  Damage to the vehicle in any capacity, not covered by Turo’s insurance, done by you, your riders, by another party, or by any Act of God, while the car is in your care, will incur charges for repair. The total sum of the charges will be your sole responsibility to pay for through reimbursement via the ‘incidentals’ feature of Turo OR through an online payment provider such as Cashapp, Venmo, or PayPal. The scope and cost of work will be determined by a local licensed mechanic, either Master Auto Center, NextGen Auto, or the manufacturer's local dealer (whichever is available soonest to perform the repairs needed). Any days where the vehicle is required to be in an un-rentable state due to the repairs being performed or being in an inoperable state while waiting for repairs to be performed will incur a $100 per day charge, including weekends, OR the half the cost of any forcibly cancelled trip by another of our renters who was denied access the vehicle due to the damage caused to the vehicle while in your care, the cost to you will be determined by which ever total is the greater amount. If you have a trip change request mid-trip which shortens your rental length of time, you will be charged a cancellation fee of $20 per day which is being cancelled. (I.e your booking is for 5 days, you change your trip to 2 days after taking delivery of your rental, the cancellation fee would be $60.) AGAIN, BY MAKING A RESERVATION OF OUR VEHICLE YOU ARE AGREEING TO THESE TERMS. ALL OUR BEST: We hope that you truly enjoy your trip and visit to our little island home; we’re incredibly blessed and thankful you decided to rent our car and we know you are going to have an amazing time here! Car was great and check in went smooth. Only complaint is host charged us a $60 cleaning fee after we had vacuumed inside and took it thru car wash. They claimed that there was sand in the carpet. We had vacuumed the inside and the sand left was very minimal.

We dislike having to charge any customer after a return; unfortunately sand is one of those things which takes a long time to clean out (especially when it’s lodged, not only in the carpet, but throughout an instrument cluster).
