Drive a Tesla

The future is here, and it’s electric

When it comes to all-electric vehicles, one name rises above the rest: Tesla Motors. This American electric vehicle company gets all the buzz in the auto industry because they’ve proven that EVs can be appealing and exciting luxury vehicles, on top of having low maintenance costs, zero tailpipe or carbon emissions, and being excellent for the Earth.

Renting a Tesla is a fantastic experience and wholly different than driving anything else in the automotive consumer landscape. To sample the revolution for yourself, you can hire a Tesla right here on Turo.

The ultimate in EV

Tesla is the top brand in battery-electric vehicles because they’ve won car buyers over with impressive driving range, innovative features, performance on par with sports cars from major automakers, and a novelty factor that still hasn’t worn off.

Sleek simplicity

Tesla’s design language is one of sleek minimalism, both inside and out. Tesla models famously come with one giant touchscreen that controls just about every function inside the cabin (like the audio system, climate controls, and vehicle settings), nixing the need for buttons, knobs, or dials.

Mind-blowing speed

Early EVs were known for being slow and sad, but Elon Musk’s creations blew those expectations out of the water. Every Tesla can do zero-to-60 in under six seconds — in some cases, half that — while using only a fraction as much energy as traditional gas-powered vehicles. Rent a Tesla today to find out for yourself.

Book a Tesla here on Turo and test drive it for a few days to get a sense of what the EV life is like. You can test out charging a Tesla at your home, at your office, or at the company’s own charging station infrastructure.

Tesla Model 3

The most affordable Tesla is also known for being the most enjoyable to drive, thanks to its compact, low-slung body and athletic handling. Parties involving a full set of adults might want to opt for the bigger models, but if your passenger load is light, this is the Tesla to get for an amazing trip.

Tesla Model S

As the car that put Tesla on the map, the Model S still stacks up well today thanks to its blend of comfort, driving finesse, and interior spaciousness. It also happens to offer the performance to match turbocharged luxury performance sedans, while getting the electric equivalent of quadruple their MPG. Its hatchback body and available third-row jump seats provide an edge in practicality, too.

Tesla Model X

The Model X will be forever defined by its dramatic falcon-wing doors — a feature you would typically see on a rare exotic vehicle. Beyond the fancy portals, you’ll find a roomy SUV with seating for up to seven (depending on configuration), along with sporty handling and rapid acceleration.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to book a car on Turo?

To book a car on Turo, you must create a Turo account, be 18 years old or older in the US, 21 years old or older in the UK, 23 years old or older in Canada, have a valid driver’s license, and get approved to drive on Turo. When you’re booking your first trip, you’ll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver’s license and some other information. In most cases, you’ll get approved immediately, and you’ll be set for every future road trip, business trip, and family vacation!

Do I need my own insurance?

No, you don’t need personal insurance coverage to book a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier, Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of coverage that’s right for you. With each plan, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company — $750,000 for the Premier plan.*

When booking a car in Canada, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier, Standard, or Minimum — and with each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance purchased from Economical Insurance Company in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec, and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) in British Columbia — up to $2,000,000 for all plans.**

When renting a car in the United Kingdom, you’ll also choose between the Premier, Standard, and Minimum protection plans. Each plan includes different limits of financial responsibility for physical damage. Protection plans are not insurance; they are an agreement between Turo and guests about financial responsibility if there is damage to the host’s vehicle during a trip.

Distinct from protection plans, all trips come with third-party auto liability insurance from ERS (Syndicate 218 at Lloyd’s) managed by IQUW Syndicate Management Limited, arranged via Turo’s broker Lockton Companies LLP. IQUW and Lockton are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

How do I get discounts when booking a car?

On your Account page, make sure you’ve checked the box to receive email notifications, and enable push notifications from the Turo app in your phone settings — we’ll send you occasional promotions, discounts, and deals!

Additionally, frequent travelers in the United States can get rewarded with the loyalty bonus — earn a promo code for one bonus day when you take trips totaling 10 days in a 90-day period!**

Are there discounts on weekly or monthly trips?

Yes, many Turo hosts offer discounted prices when you book trips lasting 3+, 7+, or 30+ days. Additionally, hosts can offer “early bird” discounts for trips booked a week or more in advance. So, get the best deals and lowest rates possible by booking longer trips, at least a week in advance.

How can I drive unlimited miles during my trip on Turo?

Some hosts offer unlimited distance for a trip; others set a daily distance limit. On the vehicle pages, you’ll see the total miles or kilometres you’re allowed to drive under the heading “Distance included.” You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the “Unlimited distance” filter.

What payment methods does Turo accept?

Turo accepts most credit cards issued by major financial institutions, including American Express and Discover cards, as well as debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo that are linked to a checking account.

Apple Pay and Google Pay on mobile devices are also accepted, but Turo does not accept cash or checks as valid payment methods.

What is the cancellation policy for guests on Turo?

You can cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours before your trip starts. If you book a trip with less than 24 hours’ notice, you have one hour after booking to cancel free of charge. If you cancel after the free cancellation period ends, you will be charged a small cancellation fee.

What are the cleaning and safety policies on Turo?

Under the enhanced cleaning policy, hosts are required to clean and disinfect their vehicles thoroughly before every trip, so you can feel safe and comfortable behind the wheel. Turo hosts have access to training materials on enhanced cleaning practices, using the latest recommendations compiled from the CDC, EPA, WHO, and vehicle detailing experts, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Is Turo a rental car company?

No. Unlike rental car companies, Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace where you can book directly from trusted local car owners in the US, Canada, and the UK. Turo does not own any vehicles — Turo hosts share their own personal cars and set their own prices, discounts, vehicle availability, and delivery options.

Is there a fee to add additional drivers to my trip?

There is no fee or additional charge for adding a driver to your trip on Turo. Only the guest who booked the trip (primary driver) can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add authorized drivers before your trip starts, though guests in the US and Canada can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress with no extra charges.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

Are there Teslas available near the airport?

Yes, there are Teslas available on Turo at locations near airports across the US, Canada, and the UK. To save time and hassle, skip the rental car counter and have your Tesla delivered to you. Set your hotel or the address of your vacation rental as your pickup location, and after arriving at your destination, take a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or shuttle service to the vehicle’s location.

What Tesla models can I book on Turo?

Browse a wide selection of Tesla vehicles for all kinds of occasions and budgets on Turo. Use the “Vehicle makes” filter to search through all available Teslas in your area, or use the “Vehicle models” filter to find a specific Tesla like the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X. For the lowest prices, use the “budget-friendly” filter to browse economy options.

How long does it take to charge a Tesla?

Charge time for a Tesla depends on a few factors, most notably the model of Tesla, its battery capacity, and the type of charging used.

If you need to add lots of range quickly, head to a Tesla Supercharger station, Tesla-exclusive charging infrastructure that’s located in virtually all major markets and is unavailable to other battery-powered vehicles. Superchargers provide Level 3 charging (the fastest kind), which can add 200 miles of range in 15 minutes, and fill any Tesla to full capacity in under 40 minutes. If you plan your journey, mini road trip, or day trip properly, this is the way to go for a seamless experience charging your Tesla over an entire trip.

Typical charging needs can be fulfilled with the more common Level 2 charging, the type used by third-party networks (like ChargePoint and EVgo) for a price, and by any business featuring Tesla’s Destination Chargers. Level 2 charging can typically refill a Tesla overnight — figure it taking six to 12 hours. Choosing Level 2 costs less and prolongs battery life.

For the lightest needs, Teslas come with a standard cable that can plug into any common household outlet for Level 1 charging, which only adds about three miles per hour.
