When you want to embrace the wonderland side of winter, there\u2019s not a much better spot to find that magic than in Salt Lake City. The nickname Ski City, USA is well deserved, and even for the less snow sport-inclined, there\u2019s no lack of options to stay enjoyably occupied.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve divided my tips between snow and city so you can mix and match to suit your interests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Skiing and snowboarding<\/span><\/h3>\n

Within Ski City, you\u2019ll find four world-class resorts all reachable within a single weekend:<\/span> Alta<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> Brighton<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> Snowbird<\/span><\/a>, and<\/span> Solitude<\/span>. Solitude is a highlight for a singularly serene experience to savor a solo run before warming up in a cozy lodge. Take advantage of the proximity of each of these four resorts and enjoy the scenic drives between to test them all and find your own favorite. \"SLC-1\"<\/p>\n

Venturing a little farther afield in the Wasatch Front, you\u2019ll find five more resorts within an hour\u2019s drive. A testament to their renown, some of these names will ring familiar even for less habitual skiers \u2014<\/span> Deer Valley<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> Sundance<\/span><\/a>, or<\/span> Park City<\/span><\/a>, anyone?<\/span><\/p>\n

Each of these resorts comes with its own particular appeal, but I\u2019m partial to Park City\u2019s touch of small-town charm amidst a luxurious accommodation and dining scene. Plus, you can check out the<\/span> Olympic Park<\/span><\/a> for a touch of nostalgia for the 2002 Winter Olympics \u2014 and even take a run on the Comet Bobsled for another kind of thrill.<\/span><\/p>\n

With snow that\u2019s frequently called the \u201c<\/span>greatest on earth<\/span><\/a>\u201d, you can\u2019t go wrong with any of these resorts.<\/span> Snowbasin<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Powder Mountain<\/span><\/a>, rounding out the nine total resorts within driving distance of Salt Lake City, are no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n

City slickin\u2019<\/span><\/h3>\n

When you\u2019re ready to check out the city itself, you\u2019ll find it\u2019s evolved into a pleasantly sophisticated place with an energetic vibe and strong sense of history. From an emerging farm-to-table restaurant industry (<\/span>Pago<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Sage\u2019s Caf\u00e9<\/span><\/a> are good bets) to the<\/span> Utah Symphony<\/span><\/a>, there\u2019s a little something for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"SLC-2\"<\/p>\n

Start by paying homage to the historical and architectural marvels of the city. The famous<\/span> Temple Square<\/span><\/a> includes the soaring Salt Lake Temple, Gothic-style Assembly Hall, and sprawling Tabernacle. Stroll or drive through<\/span> Marmalade Historic District<\/span> to check out the variety of architectural styles in the preserved vintage residential buildings. Finally, the<\/span> Salt Lake Public Library<\/span> is an imposing, curved glass building with fireplaces on every floor and a rooftop garden affording views of the Wasatch Mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fuel up after with any of the notable local restaurants catering to the steadily growing foodie scene.<\/span> Copper Onion<\/span><\/a> is a perennial favorite, offering an innovative take on American classics, and<\/span> Forage<\/span> is another home run for a classy dinner out with a seasonal, inventive menu. Top it off with drinks at<\/span> Finca<\/span><\/a>, a tapas bar with the reported<\/span> best mixologist<\/span> in Salt Lake, or keep it simple with a cold brew at the local favorite<\/span> Beer Bar<\/span><\/a>, conveniently attached to its sister Bar X, a prohibition-era bar known for cocktails both classic and new. <\/span><\/p>\n
