Fundraising is tough. It can get exhausting, overwhelming, but it\u2019s also the single most important job of a startup CEO. I\u2019ve raised six rounds of funding over the course of my career \u2014 twice at my first company before it was acquired by eBay in 2001, and now, after\u00a0raising $92 million in Series D funding<\/a>\u00a0last week, four times at\u00a0Turo, the world\u2019s leading peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace.<\/p>\n

With fundraising fresh on my mind, I thought I\u2019d share some insights I\u2019ve gleaned to help other startup CEOs as they chart their courses to profitability.<\/p>\n

1. Always be raising.<\/h3>\n

You\u2019re never not raising. Echoing Alec Baldwin\u2019s character\u2019s advice to \u201calways be closing\u201d in\u00a0Glengarry Glen Ross<\/em>, all CEOs of cash flow negative companies should always be raising.<\/p>\n

A wise person once told me that CEO actually stands for \u201cCash Extraction Officer\u201d when your company is not yet profitable. Tongue-in-cheek as that may be, cash-burning startups are existentially reliant on venture capital to execute on their mission, vision, and growth plan, so you always need to be thinking about your next milestone, and how to get there…<\/p>\n
