America loves the SUV and Porsche understood this long before any other sports car manufacturer did. It feels like yesterday when Porsche first announced their new flagship SUV \u2014 the Cayenne in 2002. To date, I think it is my most vivid memory of one of my favorite brands attempting sacrilege \u2014 or at least so it seemed. For the uninitiated, Porsche was enveloped in negative press almost overnight and if you, like every other 911 enthusiast, brought out your pitchforks and sent black-magic voodoo dolls to Stuttgart, you would be forgiven easily.<\/span><\/p>\n

Would the company known for making the stellar 911 for four decades really make an SUV? It seemed unthinkable back then but Porsche translated that opportunity into a smash hit and started an industry trend. Since then, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Maserati, and even Lamborghini have announced never-done-before SUVs. Why? The answer is straightforward. In 2016, Porsche sold more Cayennes in the US than the 911, Cayman, and Boxster <\/span>combined<\/span><\/i> and almost four times more than the Panamera. America loves the SUV indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which brings us to our car of the month for September \u2014 the Porsche Macan. After a decade of roaring success for the Cayenne, Porsche introduced its baby brother in 2014. While the base will easily outperform most compact SUVs, the top-of-the-line Macan thumps out over 440 horses for a blinding 0 to 60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. You could be sitting in a 2009 Ferrari F430 (0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds) at a red light and be out-accelerated by a Porsche Macan. Let that sink in. The Macan <\/span>is<\/span><\/i> a sports car, in a straight line and blurs the boundary between an SUV and a two-seater designed to go fast, in the corners. In case you are wondering, Porsche sold more Macans in the first half of 2017 than all non-Cayenne cars combined and 30% more than the Cayenne itself.<\/span><\/p>\n
