THE INNOVATOR\u2019S DILEMMA FOR AMERICA<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cAnd so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” –\u00a0<\/span><\/i>F. Scott Fitzgerald<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Despite Trump\u2019s hasty exit from the Paris climate accord last week, there is, and really must be, a bright side. In my view, this contentious decision is a setback for sure \u2014 whether we as a nation are succumbing to the fear of the unknown or just sticking our heads in the sand \u2014 but it\u2019s also galvanizing the business community around innovation, uniting creative minds like never before.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our departure from the Paris accord was a kneejerk reaction against an existential threat to a bygone reality. Addressing climate change threatens the familiar and menaces the American dream with abstract ideas. This administration wants to preserve coal and fossil fuel jobs, to protect Americans who rely on those jobs to survive and thrive, and to loosen emissions regulations on businesses so that the free hand of the market can continue to make America shine. The climate accord hinders job growth and burdens the economy, the administration says. And this could be construed as true, if you look at the economy through a twentieth-century lens. <\/span><\/p>\n

But we\u2019re no longer in the twentieth century. The twenty-first century is vibrating with possibility; it\u2019s not tethered to its industrial past. At its core, the issue here is the Innovator\u2019s Dilemma, being applied to the country at large. If you have something that\u2019s working well, and has been working well for years, you don\u2019t want to disrupt yourself. You don\u2019t want to derail yourself with something unproven \u2014 the proverbial \u201cIf it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it\u201d mentality…<\/span><\/p>\n
