Following a Peace Corps assignment in Goychay, Azerbajian, north of Iran (where she met her wife), she made her way to DC via a cross-country road trip from Ventura, CA four years ago, and spent a year in Turkey in between.

With a love for the journey as well as the destination, Megan and her wife are longtime road trip enthusiasts. They’ve done their best to keep their favored form of vacation alive while in DC, with jaunts to Ithaca and Boston when they first moved to the east coast.

Road tripping without a rental car

When they gave up their car because of the road congestion in DC, they knew road trips would be a little tougher to come by. “We knew we loved road trips, but the opportunity to do it again didn’t seem feasible unless we rented a car,” Megan explained. Having rented cars previously, she found the prospect unappealing to revisit. “We didn’t love it. The location wasn’t ideal, and I didn’t care for the service; it just wasn’t remarkable.”

Discovering Turo, she seemed to have found the perfect solution. With Columbus Day approaching and a long-awaited break on the horizon, it was the perfect opportunity to plan a long weekend to celebrate of her wife’s graduation from grad school.

Over the course of a couple days, they charted their course to drive from DC to Virginia Beach, including a leisurely drive along the outer banks to take in the sweeping views of endless corn, cotton, and tobacco fields. They settled on a Toyota Corolla and got along instantly with the car owner. “He dropped the car off for no extra fee and we got along great. Using Turo within your own town is a great way to get to know people and is an interesting way to interact with your community,” Megan says.

Planning the perfect getaway

Besides using Turo to get around, they opted to stay in an Airbnb rather than a traditional hotel. “We really wanted a unique experience. We stayed in a central location in a refurbished barn for a quiet getaway with a very woodsy, outdoorsy feeling. We love road trips and we love the outdoors, so this was the perfect combination of the two.”

Though not consciously drawn to the sharing economy in the past, Megan feels that “the more I think about it, the more it just makes sense.”

They even listened to community-sourced music. “This car was wired for Bluetooth, so it was super easy to hook up our iPhones,” she recalled. “We love listening to other people’s playlists on Spotify, so it was perfect!”

Making holiday plans to drive through DC

The pair rented a car for the month of December to make the most of the relative quiet and ease of driving in the city during the holiday season.

“DC has such great Christmas decorations; with a tree on the White House lawn and a beautiful Christmas display at Union Station, there’s a lot to do and see in DC during the holiday season. It’s perfect to have a car when no one else is around so you can zip around and see everything!”

In DC and want to go road tripping through the amber fields of grain?

Rent Sudheer Kumar’s Corolla

A California transplant who now hangs her hat in Washington DC, it’s safe to call Megan Lysaght an adventure aficionado.
