Cars are so much more than the sum of their parts \u2014 they\u2019re an encapsulation of a moment in time, of memory, of nostalgia. And that\u2019s exactly how John D. looks at his \u201865 Mustang convertible. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I\u2019m a caretaker of history,\u201d he mused. \u201cI love classics because they\u2019re a piece of history; everyone\u2019s got a memory of these cars \u2014 regardless of their age. They often appeal to older folks, or they remind someone from a younger generation of their parents or grandparents.\u201d An appreciation of history \u2014 and beautiful design, for that matter \u2014 transcends generational boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet, \u201cthere\u2019s a feeling today that these cars are getting out of reach for everyday people. Turo offers a way for everybody to drive something truly extraordinary,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, one of his renters had a friend visiting from Japan who wanted a true taste of American culture. So, he rented the Mustang and drove his friend down Highway 1, enhancing the iconic, panoramic drive immeasurably with a double shot of Americana. <\/span><\/p>\n

Another traveler rented it because his father used to own one. \u201cHe said that when he was driving it, he felt like he was in high school again,\u201d John remembers.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s that nostalgia, combined with the joy of driving, that compels John to share his classics. \u201cMost classic cars<\/a> sit in the garage most of the year. Thanks to Turo, I\u2019m able to have someone maintain it constantly\u201d so it can stay road-ready. In fact, during the course of this interview, his mechanic, Martin, happened to be on hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just try to keep the car in top shape,\u201d Martin said, \u201cso [John\u2019s] renters can have fun and be safe.\u201d Classic car maintenance is a labor of love, and \u201cJohn does the most he can\u201d to keep his car fighting fit.<\/span><\/p>\n
