Classic road trip games everyone knows

These are the favorite road trip games that have been keeping families entertained on long drives for generations. Classic road trip games are simple to explain with no equipment needed, and guaranteed to get everyone involved.

The license plate game

As the name suggests, this is one of the easiest games to start playing on a road trip. Players try to spot license plates from as many different US states as possible. The person (or team) who spots the most by the end of the trip wins.

Turn this game into a friendly competition by keeping it going across the whole journey (rather than playing a single round on one leg of a trip).

-

- Best for: Older kids and families on a multi-day road trip covering multiple states.

- Variation: Keep a running tally on your phone or a notepad; whoever spots a new state calls it out and claims the point.

I Spy

Another crowd pleaser, I Spy is a fun game to keep passengers of all ages entertained. One player picks an object they can see and says, “I spy with my little eye, something beginning with [letter]”.

The other players in the car take turns guessing until someone gets the correct answer. Then, the winner leads the next round. It might sound simple, but this game is surprisingly engaging and can keep players of different age groups entertained, too.

-

- Best for: Everyone! This is a road trip game that can easily be adapted for all ages.

- Variation: For younger kids, swap the letter clue for a color (“something red”) to make guessing easier.

Road trip bingo

Want to foster some healthy competition between your passengers? Road trip bingo is a must-try game. Before the trip starts, create handmade bingo cards with common road trip sights (think: gas stations, cows, billboards, motorcycles, barns, and rest stops). Throughout the drive, players tick off squares as they spot each item. The first player to complete a row wins.

-

- Best for: Crafty road trippers who have time to print and design cards before departure.

- Tip: Make a few different cards so players aren’t all hunting for the same things.

20 questions

Ready to test your knowledge? The 20 question game is a fun way to keep everyone engaged during an extended drive (ideal if you’re driving with a passenger who usually falls asleep on long stretches of the highway).

Here’s how it works: one player thinks of a person, place, or thing. The other players take turns asking yes or no questions (up to 20 total) to figure out what it is. If no one guesses correctly in 20 questions, the thinker wins the round and goes again.

-

- Best for: Families with school-aged children or couples looking to pass the time on a long drive.

- Variation: Limit to a specific category (animals only, famous people, movies) to make rounds faster and more focused.

Whether it’s kids racing to solve the next I Spy clue or friends trying to crack 20 Questions, these timeless games turn quiet miles into laughs, friendly rivalries and unforgettable moments.

Word and alphabet games

You know the feeling: the back seat is getting restless, the snacks are running low, and there’s still 90 minutes until your destination. Luckily, these word games are easy to kick off mid-drive with no setup required; just pick up and get playing!

The alphabet game

Looking for a way to pass a chunk of time? The alphabet game is the answer. Players work through in alphabetical order, finding each letter on road signs, billboards, or license plates. The first player to spot a word starting with “A” claims it and moves on to “B”, and so on.

The alphabet game can be played individually or in groups, and the whole car can even work together to complete the alphabet. Keep in mind that the letters “Q”, “X”, and “Z” are notoriously hard, so it can be helpful to adjust the rules to allow these to appear anywhere in the word.

-

- Best for: Families with kids over five years old.

Categories

Looking to test your brain? Categories is a simple way to keep the whole family chatting and giggling through a long road trip.

Here’s how it works: One player names a category (e.g. “animals that live in the ocean,” “breakfast foods,” “countries in Europe”). Then, players take turns naming something that fits the category, going around the car until someone repeats an answer, hesitates too long, or can’t think of one.

That person is out, and the last one standing wins.

-

- Best for: Word-game enthusiasts, teens, and adults who are road tripping with friends.

- Variation: Use increasingly specific categories to make later rounds harder; for example, “animals that live in the ocean” becomes “fish that appear on sushi menus.”

The last letter game

For wordsmiths looking to test their vocabulary, the last letter game is a must-try.

Here’s how to play: The first player starts by saying a word. The next player must say a new word that starts with the last letter of the previous word, and so on around the car. Anyone who repeats a word or can’t think of one in time loses a life. Three lives and you’re out.

-

- Best for: Older families with adult kids who love a vocabulary challenge.

- Variation: Set a theme (only place names, only foods) to add an extra layer of difficulty.

Name that tune

Consider yourself a music buff? Name that tune is a hilarious way to test the musical knowledge of your passengers.

One player hums or sings the opening bars of a song without using any words. Then, other players race to name the song (and optionally the artist) first. Whoever guesses correctly goes next. This game works especially well if the passenger controls the music and cuts tracks off after a few seconds.

-

- Best for: Music lovers and kids who love playing DJ for the family.

!["The]("https://turo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Word-and-alphabet-games-1024x576.jpg")
From kids eagerly spotting the next letter on every road sign to couples battling for bragging rights in Name That Tune, these classic games keep boredom off the itinerary.

Guessing games

Get to know your fellow road trippers and turn long stretches into interesting conversations with these must-try guessing games.

Two truths and a lie

Consider yourself a bit of a detective? Two truths and a lie is a classic guessing game that works well for road trips of all lengths. Each player shares three statements about themselves: two true, and one false. Other players vote on which statement they think is the lie. The player who fools the most people wins the round.

-

- Best for: Learning unexpected things about your travel companions.

Celebrity / who am I?

Pop culture buffs: this is a must-try road trip game.

Here’s how to play: One player thinks of a famous person (real or fictional). Other players ask yes/no questions to narrow it down, things like: “Are you alive?”, “Are you in movies?”, or “Is your hair blonde?”.

The game keeps going until someone correctly guesses the celebrity. Keep rounds short and fast-paced for the best experience.

-

- Best for: Older families with teen or adult kids, and cars with at least four passengers or more.

- Variation: Write celebrity names on pieces of paper and stick them to foreheads (or hold up to faces) so the player themselves doesn’t know who they are, but everyone else can see.

!["Celebrity]("https://turo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Celebrity-who-am-I-1024x576.jpg")
Some friends bring the snacks, others bring impossible celebrity clues. Put everyone’s pop culture knowledge to the test and see who solves the mystery first.

Would you rather?

Traveling with new acquaintances? The “would you rather?” game is one of the best ways to turn fellow travelers into lifelong friends. To start, one player poses a “would you rather” dilemma: two options, both with drawbacks. Everyone else votes, then explains their choice.

-

- Best for: Sparking unexpected conversations with game that is about good discussion (not crowning winners).

- Examples to get started: “Would you rather only be able to travel by bus or only be able to travel by boat?” / “Would you rather have a flat tire in a city or run out of gas on a highway?”

Storytelling and creative games

Storytelling games are underrated on road trips. But they are perfect for slowing the pace down, getting creative, and producing funny results.

The story game

Think you can tell a gripping story? One player starts a story with a single sentence. The next player adds another sentence, and so on around the car. The story can go anywhere: players can introduce new characters, plot twists, or disasters at any point. Consider setting a loose ending target so stories wrap up before they drag.

-

- Best for: Creative kids and families looking to foster collaboration between kids of different ages.

- Variation: Each player must connect their sentence to the previous one using the words “but suddenly…” to keep the story escalating.

!["Storytelling]("https://turo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Storytelling-and-creative-games-1024x576.jpg")
Swap “Are we there yet?” for “What happens next?” as every family member adds a new twist to the story, turning an ordinary drive into the trip’s funniest memory.

The movie pitch

Film fanatics will love this road trip game. Each player has 60 seconds to invent and pitch an original movie, including the title, genre, main character, and plot twist. Then, the other players in the car rate the pitch out of 10. Whoever scores highest across three rounds wins.

-

- Best for: Giving imaginative kids a creative outlet during a long road trip.

Fortunately / unfortunately

Last, but certainly not least, is one of the best storytelling games that works perfectly for a road trip. Players take turns telling a story by alternating between “fortunately” and “unfortunately” sentences. The conversation might flow like this: “Fortunately, we spotted a great diner” / “Unfortunately, it was closed.” / “Fortunately, the owner let us in anyway.”

The contrast between good and bad fortune keeps the story going in unexpected and entertaining directions.

-

- Best for: Quick witted kids and adults looking for a collaborative game that inspires shared chuckles.

Road trip games for kids

The best road trip games for little ones tend to be simple to explain, easy to follow, and designed to let their humor and imagination run wild.

-

- The quiet game (who can stay silent the longest): A road trip game that parents love (for obvious reasons).

- Cow counting: Ideal for countryside drives, it’s as easy as spotting cows out the window. One team per side of the car, and passing a graveyard wipes your count.

- The color car game: Each player picks a car color and counts how many they spot in 10 minutes.

- Spot the state game: A simplified license plate version focused on counting states; ideal for younger kids.

Road trip games for adults

Whether you’re road tripping with friends or family, these games are ideal for adults traveling together for extended periods of time in one vehicle.

-

- Trivia: A low-pressure crowd pleaser that uses general knowledge questions (think a pub quiz style that allows you to keep score across rounds).

- The hot take game: Players share an unpopular opinion and the others debate it; ideal for sparking interesting conversations.

- Six degrees of separation: Connect two unrelated celebrities through mutual co-stars or collaborators in six steps or fewer.

Tips for keeping the game going

Want to keep the whole car engaged in the game? Here are few pointers to keep the game going.

-

- Mix it up: No single game should run for the whole trip. Rotate every 30–45 minutes to keep energy up and avoid fatigue.

- Keep score across the journey: Running tallies across multiple games give the trip a sense of friendly competition that builds as the miles pass.

- Let kids take the lead: Letting younger passengers choose the next game gives them ownership of the trip and keeps them invested.

- Download a road trip app: Several free apps offer digital versions of road trip bingo, license plate tracking, and trivia; worth having as a backup for quiet stretches.
