The car community and Tesla fanatics have been buzzing for weeks in anticipation of last night\u2019s unveiling of the Tesla Model 3<\/a>, the company\u2019s first affordable product for the everyman (affordable as compared to its pricier older siblings, the Model S and the Model X). <\/span><\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/span><\/a> reports Tesla CEO Elon Musk stating at last night\u2019s unveiling that the Model 3 is \u201cthe final step in the master plan, which is a mass market, affordable car.\u201d The \u201csecret master plan\u201d, according to the <\/span>company\u2019s website<\/span><\/a>, is to \u201caccelerate the world\u2019s transition to sustainable energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Model 3 starts at $35,000 (reportedly $27,500 after federal tax credits for electric vehicles) before adding any bells and whistles, has a 215 mile range per charge, comfortably seats five adults, and goes from zero to 60 in under six seconds. It goes into production in late 2017, so buyers are in for a bit of wait, but you can order one today for a $1,000 down payment. <\/span><\/p>\n

And how the Tesla crowds did jump at the opportunity to get theirs on lock. <\/span>According to NPR<\/span><\/a>, by 10 pm last night, the company already had 140,000 pre-orders for a car almost no one had seen. Thankfully, the Model 3 didn\u2019t disappoint, but those soaring order figures certainly speak volumes about the company\u2019s cachet and its almost cultish fanbase.<\/span><\/p>\n
