A date with a Reuben

Anthony and Leila, otherwise known as The Recipe Hunters, are extreme food lovers who travel the world volunteering on small organic farms and homesteads as they search for traditional recipes and the stories behind the locals who make them. In our latest Travelogue, they rented Jason’s Mercedes-Benz M-Class in Chicago to road trip out to Michigan, and make their dream foodie road trip to Zingerman’s Deli come true.

On the way to Ann Arbor, where Zingerman’s Deli is located, they each picked out a few essential stops. Anthony pulled over to grab a cup of joe at Sweetwater’s Donut Mill, and walked out of one of Michigan’s best donut shops with an idyllic frosted cake donut sprinkled with peanuts.

Dearborn, Michigan is known to many as “Little Lebanon” and its streets are lined with shawarma delis, Middle Eastern pastry shops, and hookah bars. So Leila could not pass up the chance to stop for a taste of a pistachio burma at one of her favorite pastry shops, Shatila.

Finally, they made it to Zingerman’s Deli for the main event: the Reuben of a lifetime. Juicy layers of corned beef blanketed by a bed of briny sauerkraut, Swiss Emmental cheese, and a powerful kick of Russian dressing, enveloped between two slabs of grilled Jewish rye bread. It was everything they hoped for and more. Anthony and Leila also got to know Ari, the cofounder of Zingerman’s, who gave them a tour of their bakery, creamery, confectioner, and coffee company.

They even headed over to the Zingerman’s Cornman Farms, where Leila got to hang out with some adorable goats.
