Weary of snow and slush? Planning a trip to a sunnier spot can brighten up even the dreariest of winter days. We’ve rounded up five of our favorite destinations to inspire your next coastal vacation. From lazy days out the beach to adventurous pre-dawn hikes, there’s always a way to customize your trip to make it an ideal fit.
Destin, Florida
Seeking calm, emerald waters and lush white sand beaches? Destin is a perfect spot to relax, soak in the sun, and even try your hand at fishing. Though a popular tourist destination, there are more secluded options for hiking, swimming, and kayaking in Destin. We suggest checking out Henderson State Park and Grayton Beach State Park if you’re looking to get away from the crowds. For families, there are pirate cruises, alligator tours, and the Gulfarium to entertain all ages.
San Diego, California
San Diego boasts 70 miles of Pacific coastline and a reputation as one of the healthiest and fittest cities in the US. If you’re looking to work up a sweat, we’d suggest a bike ride along the coast or hike Torrey Pines near La Jolla for breathtaking views. For those looking for something a bit more leisurely, treat yourself to a massage at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar or a rejuvenating yoga retreat in San Diego’s more serene spots.
Nassau, The Bahamas
Take a break from the cold, blustery weather with a trip to the Bahamas – an ideal weekend trip for those on the East Coast. Explore one or some of the 29 islands by boat. Relax on the deck, soak in the sun, or plan an island tour to learn more about Bahamian history. Are you looking for something a little more adventurous? Plan a stop at the Exumas where you can dive and swim with the cays’ famous domesticated pigs in crystal clear waters. The Bahamas are also an ideal place to try stand-up paddleboarding since the ocean is fairly calm.
Maui, Hawaii
Pristine beaches, dormant volcanoes, and hidden reefs make Maui a prime destination for those who love the sea and year-round warmth. We suggest that you get the lay of the land by helicopter, but don’t forget your camera – you’ll want it for those incredible aerial views. After that, our ideal itinerary would include snorkeling, hiking Haleakala just in time for sunrise, and ziplining. Up for a drive? Rent a car and drive the Road to Hana for beautiful coastal views. (Jurassic Park fans might recognize some familiar landscape.)
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Some might associate Cabo with tequila and nightlife, but it’s also a great spot for people to get some fresh air and soak in some vitamin D during the dreary months. The Baja California Sur coast is beautiful, and there are so many ways to experience it – go parasailing or stay dry onboard a sailing yacht. After a day outdoors, head into town for traditional Mexican food – we’ve had our eye on Las Mariscadas – before dancing the night away.
