AIR-COOLED PORSCHES IN ALL THEIR GLORY
Luftgekühlt (air-cooled in German) was an event conceptualized by two guys — Patrick Long and Howie Idelson over coffee. It was meant to be a gathering for a select few interested in air-cooled classics from Porsche. Little did they know, a show that started just four years ago with 40 cars would transform into a cult classic, with hundreds of cars on show and thousands of visitors. Turo was fortunate to be invited to Luft4 in the LA harbor area. Here’s what we saw!
The prize of the show was this 1951 Porsche 356/2 063. The first post-World War Two German LeMans entrant that launched a tradition of wins.
The main hall featured lot cars in classic silver. Incredible to see these rare finds from the 1950’s in pristine condition.
Next up was a group of LeMans legends. The iconic 917K in the Gulf livery exposed its massive 5L, flat 12 engine. Note the huge 17″ rear tires!
More Porsches from every decade.
The parking lot of the show was worthy of a show in itself. I never thought I’d see the one and only Carrera GT, as well as lots of GT3s, GT4s, and, of course, the iconic 911.
Thanks so much to Patrick and Howie for hosting us — you made this Porsche enthusiast’s month!
