Audi joins the performance EV party
As established as electric vehicles already seem these days, the choices for a high-performance model are still quite limited. If you’re in the market for an exciting EV with upscale features, you have Tesla, the Porsche Taycan, and now this: the Audi e-tron GT.
The e-tron GT is an exquisite machine no matter how you look at it. Any new model that marries electric propulsion, a luxurious interior, and bonafide sports car performance is sure to present a pretty stunning package. Sidney’s 2022 Audi RS e-tron GT is one of the first listed on the marketplace, so we’ve named it our car of the month for this February!

The e-tron GT is the newest model in Audi’s e-tron line — the family-friendly e-tron crossover came first, and now Audi’s first performance EV has hit Turo. This is a sports sedan that excels in nearly every area. It’s an exciting option all on its own, but it’s especially appealing given the limited competing models available today. Performance EVs from the likes of BMW and Mercedes are on their way, but until then, the e-tron GT is one of only a few choices if you’re looking for battery-powered thrills.
Looks are always subjective, but the e-tron GT’s design is really quite magnificent. You could argue this is just a rebodied Porsche Taycan — Audi has borrowed much of the e-tron GT’s inner workings from their sister brand. But this car stands apart from the Taycan with bold styling and chiseled lines. It comes at a slightly lower price than its cousin, but it’s still a premium vehicle aimed at well-heeled drivers thinking about making the switch to electric.
Perhaps it’s not quite as flashy as the Taycan, or other Audi sports cars for that matter, but the relative restraint is part of the e-tron GT’s appeal. After all, this is a luxury sedan with two rows of seats, decent cargo capacity, and everyday usability.
There’s no getting around it — this car is super fast. The e-tron GT touts the exhilarating acceleration that’s come to be expected in high-end EVs today: zero to 60 happens in just 2.9 seconds. Sidney’s car in Los Angeles is in the top-rung RS trim, meaning it maxes out at 637 horsepower using two electric motors and a two-speed transmission (Teslas use one gear only). You can shave many tenths off the zero-to-60 time in a Model S Plaid, but this Audi offers much more than superlative stats.
Just about everyone who’s been able to experience this car on the road reports genuine sports car performance. Even with a heavy battery to haul around, the e-tron GT manages remarkably responsive handling, a smooth ride on bumpy roads, and an exceptionally quiet cabin. And it’s available with tricks like all-wheel steering and adjustable air suspension.
Inside, it looks and feels very similar to what you’d see in other new Audi models. Which is a fantastic thing — Audi interiors always hit the mark these days. Sidney’s car’s cabin boasts a sharp design with fanciful digital displays and upscale materials like carbon fiber and alcantara. Though it’s not the spaceship look some automakers are going after with their new EVs, it seems Audi has kept the interior rather “standard” and left the mind blowing to the driving experience.
Finally we come to the range. The EPA puts the 2022 e-tron GT’s max range at 232 miles, which falls short of the Taycan and certainly doesn’t compare to the big-battery Teslas. Of course you can squeeze a bit more range out of the car with relaxed driving, but with its prodigious acceleration, it might require a level of self-control. Overall, 232 miles should be plenty for everyday use and modest road trips, but it isn’t the best figure available.
So, this is a proper performance sedan, a true luxury vehicle, and a real looker. As one of the first high-performance electric models from a legacy automaker, the Audi RS e-tron GT is a fantastic alternative to Tesla.
