Over-the-top done just right
Since McLaren launched their first proper production car back in 2011, the 12C, they’ve been bringing excellent models in and out of their roster. By infusing those supercars with race-bred engineering, immense speed, and exotic looks, McLaren has stayed competitive with the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini. Their production lineup changes often with special variants and million-dollar hypercars coming and going. But one of McLaren’s current models is surely one of their greatest hits: the 720S.
The 720S is an exclusive do-it-all supercar that fetches a huge price and is as talented as it is evocative. For our August car of the month, let’s take a look at Rany’s 2022 720S Spider in Los Angeles.

2022 McLaren 720S Spider
| ENGINE | HORSEPOWER | 0 to 60 MPH | TOP SPEED | MILEAGE | DAILY PRICE* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4L V8 | 710 hp | 2.8 sec | 212 mph | 18 mpg | $1,399 |
| ENGINE | HP | 0 to 60 MPH | TOP SPEED | MPG | DAILY PRICE* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4L V8 | 710 hp | 2.8 sec | 212 mph | 18 mpg | $1,399 |
Right to the stat sheet: 710 horsepower from a turbocharged 4L V8, 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, and a top speed of 212 mph. This blistering speed is hardly achievable in the real world (please, no speeding), but simply knowing you have that power on tap is a big part of the fun with machines of this caliber.
Rany’s 720S is, by all accounts, one of the most complete driver’s cars out there. Thanks to McLaren’s racing heritage and top-flight engineering, this car is a beast around circuits and in a straight line, with razor-sharp electrohydraulic handling, excellent brakes, and a ruthlessly efficient dual-clutch transmission.

But one of McLaren’s most impressive tricks, for the 720S and the rest of their road cars, is that there seems to be zero compromises to the ride. The chassis and suspension work together in a way where this car is far more comfortable around town than it has any right to be. “Typical” supercars have always moved roughly on everything but the smoothest highways, but the 720S is notably relaxed on normal roads and at slow speeds — without sacrificing cornering ability.

Let’s also not ignore the sensation of pure drama that Rany’s McLaren exudes. If the slippery, exotic shape doesn’t give away the 720S’s specialness, the extravagant dihedral doors loudly announce the car’s arrival. McLaren uses a unique system of butterfly doors that lack a top hinge on the roof or A-pillar, allowing frameless windows and a graceful-but-shouty multi-angle opening action. This means McLaren can use the fancy apertures on the roofless Spider as well as the coupe, and avoid sacrificing an ounce of theater.

The cockpit is similarly extraordinary. Soft alcantara covers most surfaces of the focused and sleek interior. Carbon fiber pieces and exotic forms abound, but there are few frivolities or shiny toys to distract you from the road — where the real magic happens.
If you find yourself in the Los Angeles area and are looking for a truly exceptional driving experience, this one’s hard to beat.
