Much like 2020, 2021 has been mired by the lasting effects of the pandemic. Fortunately, there is growing optimism that we have turned a corner and now seems an apt moment to share some exciting news as we begin the next chapter of Turo’s journey in the UK.

Our third year in the UK has seen our community grow to over 270,000 individuals. We’re more dedicated to developing the UK business than ever before and committed to putting the UK’s 31.7 million cars to better use. Here are a few of my highlights from the year so far and a look to the near future.

Turo goes carbon neutral

To mark Earth Day, Turo announced that it would be offsetting its estimated global carbon emissions by investing in greenhouse gas-reducing projects. I’m proud to see us lead the car sharing and car rental industries to be the first to commit to carbon neutrality. Equally, I’m encouraged to see our marketplace shifting towards more climate-friendly cars and it’s great to see hosts listing EVs — from BMW i3’s to Renault Zoes — across the country.

An American icon reaches UK shores

Ford’s hotly anticipated EV version of its Mustang — the Mustang Mach-E — was released earlier this year and Turo was one of the only places in the UK where people could secure an extended test drive. As we continue to encourage our community to book and list EVs, it was awesome to see how popular the Mach-E was — one guest’s review suggests he is even considering purchasing one himself!

Turo becomes a great place to find a truly unique drive

In September, we got one step closer to fulfilling our vision of providing a marketplace full of cars you won’t find anywhere else. Hosts in the UK will soon be able to list eligible vehicles valued up to £100,000, irrespective of the insurance category the car falls into. This means you could soon see everything from a Porsche 911 to a Tesla Model S. What’s more, we’ve lowered the age hosts can list to 18, meaning offsetting car ownership costs is now more accessible than ever before. We’ll reach out to hosts directly as soon as the necessary updates are made to our app and website.

The journey continues

I’m tremendously proud of what we have built so far — a truly inclusive and pioneering marketplace where individuals from all walks of life can share experiences and create memories. And our resilience to macro changes has only made us stronger. I’m excited to think about what the next instalment will bring. Thank you everyone!
