Building community and creating connections are core values for Turo. This is why we’re pleased to announce our partnership with Santropol Roulant.

Santropol Roulant is a prominent community food hub in Montreal. Fuelled by a team of passionate volunteers, the organization delivers tens of thousands of meals every year to people dealing with a loss of autonomy. The organization also develops special programs focused on food sustainability, mobility, and developing intergenerational relationships within the community.

The recent pandemic increased the demand for Santropol Roulant’s services. The economic pressures of the pandemic meant that more people relied on community food hubs. There was also the issue of social isolation. With social distancing measures in affect, people found themselves cut off from vital community hubs.

“When you think of our average number of meals a day pre-COVID, it was exceptional to get a day where we delivered 120 meals, but now we reach that regularly,” says Mélanie Godel, Fundraising Coordinator at Santropol Roulant.

The organization services seven different neighbourhoods in Montreal. Two of the neighbourhoods they serve, Côte-des-Neiges and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, are further away from the rest. The Roulant has traditionally relied on two vehicles to service these areas, one for each route. Due to COVID-19, Santropol Roulant had to divide these routes between two vehicles each to ensure social distancing between volunteers.

“Previously, we only needed two cars, five days a week. Now we need four cars, five days a week, for all of our routes,” Mélanie explains.

Thanks to the generous contribution of a Toyota Corolla from Montreal host Sofiane A., a Turo vehicle currently helps Santropol Roulant manage increased demand in a safe, sustainable way. Today, Sofiane’s Toyota Corolla can be found rolling through the streets of Montreal on any of the Roulant’s delivery days, which are Mondays through Wednesdays as well as Fridays and Saturdays.

“We’re very excited about this new [Turo] car and what we’re able to do with it, which by the way, looks great,” says Melanie. “Everything happened very quickly at the beginning of COVID. The meals-on-wheels really became our primary focus. It’s our main essential service, and it really is about the food security of individuals who are the most vulnerable to COVID-19.”
