SATISFY YOUR CHALET CRAVINGS
Even though it’s the shortest month of the year, February in Canada can feel endless. Why not brighten up your winter blues by planning a ski trip to some of our best — and snowiest — destinations?
Alberta
In the case of winter sports, west is definitely best. The advantage of living near the Rockies means that downhill activities are infinitely more exciting on an actual mountain. There’s nothing like fresh powder on the top of an already scenic view.
Start in Edmonton, and rent Mauricio’s Range Rover to get to your destination in a car that looks as good as you will in your ski suit. Though Banff and Lake Louise seem like obvious choices for your trip, the cozy town of Jasper, AB boasts just as breathtaking views with less congestion on the mountain. Spend your days out on the hills, and in the evenings relax by the fire in your rustic winter cabin.
Ontario
If you’re in Ottawa, you know the benefits of living near the Quebec border when it comes to weekend road trips, but there’s always the option of enjoying a beavertail and skating on the canal downtown. On the other hand, living in Toronto can be busy, crowded, and stressful, and sometimes you just need to get away from it all.
Thankfully, there’s Blue Mountain. Just a two-hour drive from the city center, it not only has a multitude of accommodations available, but the bar scene of downtown Collingwood on winter weekends is a perfect spot for some après-ski unwinding. Get your group of seven together and pile into David’s Volvo XC90, complete with ski rack, and enjoy your getaway from the city.
Quebec
In Quebec, the best part of driving outside of the city isn’t just the beautiful landscape and peaceful roads — the food options also get better. Rent Philippe’s Mercedes GLK, and you’ll realize that the highlight of the drive to Mont Tremblant from Montréal, though punctuated by the dramatic topography of the Laurentians, is grabbing a poutine from any frites shack en route. You’ll never look at La Banquise the same way again.
The best part about Tremblant is not just the snowsports. For those in your group who might not love to ski, but love the idea of a weekend trip, the pedestrian village boasts boutiques, restaurants, and even spas. Make plans to meet them in the lodge for a hot chocolate after your day shredding the slopes.
