Free camping near Byron Bay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the catch: there are actually no free camping sites in Byron Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camping on streets, parks and reserves in the Byron Shire is prohibited, and enforcement patrols work seven days a week, dishing out fines. They range from an on-the-spot fine of $110 to a maximum penalty of $2,200. Instead, visitors are advised to stay in approved holiday parks and camping grounds, which we’ll cover in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While free overnight camping isn’t allowed at rest stop areas, these are some common rest areas in the surrounding suburbs that some travellers use to rest along their journeys. Note that these areas will have very basic facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yelgun Rest Area is a 20-minute drive from central Byron, off the Pacific Highway, managed by Transport NSW. While camping overnight at Yelgun Rest Area is not allowed, many travellers do take ‘extended’ rest stops here, making use of the close location, kids playground and BBQ station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyagarah Rest Area is another popular spot, 15 minutes out of town, where travellers in campervans have reported hassle-free stops. Again, a ‘no camping’ sign makes the rules clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
