Sydney host Anthony T. has turned his car sharing venture into a family-powered success, even bringing his dad on board for the ride.

Running a business can come with all kinds of perks, from being your own boss to building serious wealth. But for Sydney host Anthony T., the biggest benefit is the ability to focus on his family.

The flexibility and financial stability of operating a car sharing business on Turo have allowed him to leave his former career behind and work to a schedule that suits him, his wife, and his young kids. It’s also enabled Anthony’s dad to join in on the success so they can grow the venture together.

Here’s a look at how Anthony balances his flourishing business with family life.

From stress to stability

Anthony’s a seasoned business owner, having cut his entrepreneurial teeth in the construction industry. But he found construction work was burning him out, largely because he was constantly dealing with unpaid invoices, leaving him stressed and drained.

He came across Turo a few years back and decided to try his luck with a single car. Like many successful hosts, the side hustle quickly took off and he was able to scale his portfolio with his earnings.

Anthony now has 13 vehicles comprising supercars, EVs, SUVs, luxury models, and a newly acquired Mustang convertible. His diverse portfolio enables him to cater to a range of guests and trip requirements.

He’s also recently started running the NSW and Melbourne operations for Your Drive, giving him additional income without the additional overhead.

His hard work has certainly paid off. In the last year, Anthony’s made more than $300,000 on Turo from his own portfolio alone.

Compared to construction, he says Turo is less stressful, more professional, and better aligned with his values. He also likes the fact that his payments on Turo are completed within 3-5 days, ensuring a regular and predictable income stream and avoiding the frustration of chasing overdue payments.

“With construction, I’m still owed money from 1,200 days ago,” he says. “With Turo, the money comes in every time a booking ends.”

Anthony has expanded his Turo fleet to include premium models like this BMW Z4.

A family affair

Thanks to Anthony’s success on Turo, he’s been fortunate enough to bring his dad on board. His father takes care of some of the day-to-day operations at Anthony’s Merrylands site, including washing the cars between trips.

It’s a particularly meaningful achievement for Anthony, as he was previously too busy with his construction work to share much time with his father.

“It’s allowed me to spend more time with my dad,” he says. “Me and my dad get to bond over Turo.”

A highlight was the trip they took together to Melbourne to pick up Anthony’s newest car. It was his father’s first time in the Victorian capital and proved to be a particularly memorable bonding experience.

“It was his first time there and even his first time in a pool – he was swearing at me the whole time, but it was funny,” says Anthony. “We stayed at Crown, went to the sauna, had a late-night coffee in the city. Stuff we don’t normally get to do in Sydney.”

What started as a business has become a family affair, giving Anthony and his dad more quality time together.

Doing it for the kids

In the last couple of years, Anthony has started a family of his own. With his partner, Mary, he has an 18-month-old son and a newborn daughter.

Another benefit of building his own successful car sharing business is that he’s able to support his family. The consistently high earnings he makes on Turo mean they can comfortably live on his income alone.

Anthony also appreciates the flexibility that Turo offers, which allows him to manage trips around family life – a privilege he never would’ve enjoyed in construction.

“[Turo has] allowed me to be a better person, a better father, spend more time with my family and friends, and be more flexible,” he says.

While he’s currently working overtime to build up his business on Turo, the goal is to eventually get it to a place where he can be fully present for his kids.

He’s implementing systems to streamline operations and aims to grow the venture into a well-oiled, self-sufficient machine.

“I’m putting in the hard yards now so that in a few years I can be at my kids’ sports games and dance recitals,” he says.

Anthony’s guest-first philosophy

Anthony is a recognised Power Host with an impressive track record of five-star reviews. Achieving Power Host status is no mean feat, but it’s little surprise given his meticulous operations and steadfast dedication to guest service.

He maintains a guest-first approach, which encompasses lockboxes for convenience, clean and well-maintained cars, and a few premium extras like delivery, stocked fridges, and shuttle service.

He says new hosts should prioritise guests above all else, because that encourages repeat bookings and referrals.

“You can’t just give a car a quick wipe and think it’s fine – that won’t guarantee customer satisfaction,” he says. “If you put yourself in the guest’s shoes, you can’t go wrong. You wouldn’t want a dirty car – you want the best experience.”

He also recommends being patient, remembering that success on Turo is a long-term goal.

“It’s about the long game, not a quick money grab,” he says. “It’s okay to start with one car. I started with one and now I’ve got 12. If you put in the effort, you get results.”
