Frequently asked questions

How is my car protected while it’s earning passive income for me?

Your car is protected under a protection plan offered through Turo that you choose. You can rest easy knowing you’re covered with up to $750,000⁴ in third-party liability insurance from Travelers, plus you choose from an array of protection plans that include varying levels of reimbursement for car repairs, up to your car’s actual cash value⁵ in case of damage during a trip. Plus, you can choose from an array of plans that include varying levels of reimbursement for physical damage. Learn more about vehicle protection.

As a vehicle owner, you decide which protection plan you want to use, and your host will select it when managing the vehicle.

If you tend to be cautious and you want protection with the full suite of extra benefits, including exterior wear and tear reimbursement, then the 60 plan is for you. You’ll earn less, but you'll have more protection.

However, if you’re more comfortable with risk and want to cash in with a higher-risk, higher-reward plan, the 90 plan is for you.

Many vehicle owners choose the 80 plan, which allows you to pocket more with a moderate deductible.

You’ll still need personal insurance on all vehicles you share through the program. Some carriers exclude car sharing for coverage, so be sure you understand your policy.

Do I still need personal insurance outside of Turo? What insurance policies do you recommend?

Yes, you still need personal insurance for all vehicles you share through the program, and you are in charge of paying for it and keeping it up to date.

We recommend a policy from ABI that covers both car owners and hosts who share cars through the program. If you use another company, check with your insurance carrier or agent to ensure there are no coverage issues for participating in car sharing on Turo. Some carriers exclude car sharing for coverage, so be sure you understand the policy you choose.

What happens if my car gets into an accident?

If your car is damaged while on a Turo trip, the protection plan you selected applies. Please note that depending on the protection plan you select, you may be responsible for a deductible before you are reimbursed for damage.

If your car is damaged while not being driven and not on a Turo trip, but while in possession of your host (or their employee), your personal vehicle insurance will apply for costs relating to repairing your vehicle. If applicable, you’ll also be responsible for meeting your personal vehicle insurance's deductible.

If your car is damaged while being driven by your host (or their employee), your host will be responsible for costs incurred with repairing or replacing your car.

Please check with your personal insurance carrier to see what coverage they may offer in each of these scenarios.

In the event of an accident, your host will arrange repairs and facilitate communication between you, the guest, and Turo to ensure damage claims are processed and resolved.

The dedicated program management team can help resolve any issues resulting from an accident.

Which cars / how many cars can I share through the program?

Cars shared through the program must be in great working condition, be model year 2016 or newer, have less than 80,000 miles on the odometer, and be fully insured and registered in your name.

If your vehicle is leased or subject to a financing agreement, ensure car sharing isn’t excluded by the lender.

You can add as many cars as you want as you grow your passive income portfolio. The more cars you add, the more passive income you’ll earn!

When can I speak with my host?

Once you’ve signed the agreement, Turo will put you in touch with your host to arrange pickup.

How much / when will I get paid?

Per your agreement, your host is required to pay you your share of earnings on the 15th of every month, via direct deposit or electronically transferred funds. This payment will cover your revenue share of earnings from your car(s) for the previous month.

You’ll receive a custom “Revenue Report” on the 15th of each month showing how your car performed on Turo the month prior.

On average, you’ll keep 70% of your car’s earnings on Turo, though the exact revenue split may vary if your guest is charged any fees or purchases Extras. You can read exact revenue split rules here.

If you have any issues or questions related to payments, the program management team can help ensure that your host sends you the correct revenue share payments within the agreed-upon timeframe.

Will my host charge a fee to manage my vehicle on Turo?

No. Your host will not charge a vehicle management fee. Your host is compensated by keeping 30% of your car's earnings on Turo.

In rare cases, your host may ask you if you want your car to stay at an airport lot, which could involve an additional fee for using the lot. If you’re not comfortable paying extra fees, let the program management team know.

Whose Turo account will my car be listed under?

Your car will be listed under your host’s account. All hosts admitted to the program are among the top-performing hosts on Turo, so they have well-established Turo profiles and understand ways to maximize vehicle revenue.

If your car was previously listed on Turo under your personal account, Turo will help you delete your vehicle from your account so your host can list it.

Please note that none of the reviews your car earned previously will carry over to your host’s account, so it will be like your car is starting with a blank slate.

What if I want to use my car for personal use temporarily?

If you want to use your car after it’s been listed by your host, we recommend connecting with your host and, if your car isn’t already booked for a trip, asking them to block off the days you’d like to use it.

In this case, you’ll be responsible for picking up and dropping off your car during your personal trip.

Please note that if your car has upcoming booked trips, you should allow those trips to finish first.

What if I want to share a car through the program but it already has booked trips on my own Turo account?

If guests have already booked your car while it was listed on your personal Turo account, please complete those trips first before listing your car through a vehicle manager. Once your trips have ended, Turo will help remove your car from your account and transfer it to your host.

We suggest blocking off your calendar as well to ensure no one books your car.

How do I remove my car from the program?

You may remove your car from the program whenever you want, as long as you allow trips that guests already booked to finish first. If you have questions about removing your car, let the program management team know.

I’m currently a host on Turo. How can I become a vehicle manager?

Right now, Power Host status is the minimum requirement to join the program as a vehicle manager. If you’re currently a Power Host, use this link to apply, and the program management team will review your application.

Who handles maintenance for my car?

Vehicle owners are financially responsible for maintenance costs when sharing cars through the program.

Your host will handle the majority of regular maintenance for your car and deduct maintenance expenses from your monthly earnings.

In the event that your car requires major maintenance, your host will connect with you and ask you if you want them to handle it or if you’d rather handle it yourself. In many cases, hosts have relationships with top local mechanics.

If your car has an active recall, please perform any required maintenance before listing it through the program. Cars with active recalls can’t be listed on Turo. If your car is recalled after it’s been listed, Turo will notify your host through the app.

What should I do to prepare for when my host picks up my car?

Please ensure that your car’s registration and insurance are up to date and that your car is cleaned as if you were going to use it yourself or let a family member borrow it.

Your host will pick up your car(s) at a time that’s suitable for you. Once you’ve matched with a host, you’ll both agree on a time and place for pickup.

Note: Vehicle pickup must occur within 72 hours of the agreement being signed. Once the three-day vehicle pickup window has elapsed, your vehicle(s) will be removed from the program

What happens if my car incurs tolls or gets a ticket?

If your car already has a toll transponder linked to your credit card, then you'll be responsible for sending toll receipts to your host, who will then request reimbursement from the guest.

If your car doesn’t have a toll transponder linked to your credit card, then you’ll receive a toll invoice in the mail, and you’ll be responsible for sending that toll invoice to your host, who will then request reimbursement from the guest.

Turo recommends that your host purchase a transponder if you live in an area with multiple toll roads or bridges. Then have your host create a transponder account, so they can download invoices and receipts themselves.

If a guest gets a ticket linked to your car, you’ll be notified by mail at your car’s registered address. From there, you'll have 90 days to let your host know and request reimbursement. This full amount will be paid by the guest who incurred the fine.

If your host (or their employee) gets a ticket linked to your car, you’ll be notified by mail at your car’s registered address. From there, you’ll have 90 days to let your host know and request reimbursement. This full amount will be paid by your host.

Where is my car kept? How safe is my car?

We diligently source and vet our hosts to make sure they are properly set up to manage multiple vehicles. In many cases, hosts managing lots of vehicles lease large commercial lots that come with 24/7 security to help ensure that the cars remain safe at all times.

How does Turo vet vehicle managers?

Hosts approved to manage cars through the program are among the top-performing hosts in their given markets and experienced in managing others’ vehicles.

They’ve been selected based on having the highest performance metrics and have all been interviewed by the program management team to ensure that they’re ready and willing to provide the highest level of service to vehicle owners.

  1. 1. Vehicle owners will earn 70% of their car’s trip price, which constitutes the majority of any given vehicle’s earnings on Turo. Exact revenue split can be viewed here.

  2. 2. Average monthly passive income estimates are calculated by applying the standard program revenue share split of 70% to the average annual earnings figure of $10,868 per car, per year ($906 per car, per month). 70% of $906 = $634 per car, per month, on average.

The average annual earnings of $10,868 per car, per year represent the average Turo earnings among all US-based vehicles where there were at least 3 distinct vehicles within each market area between 01/01/2020 and 06/30/2023. The vehicles have a value of $10,000 to $100,000 and are model years 2018-2024.

Region is defined as one of the top 18 market areas where Turo is available throughout the US as ranked by gross net revenue. These geographical zones loosely follow the borders of Nielsen's Designated Marketing Areas (DMA) map. “National average” represents the average across all 18 top US markets in the model. “US Other” represents the average across all US markets, excluding the top 18 markets.

Estimates are based on past data. Your earnings will depend on your car’s availability and price, demand, and market seasonality in your area. Earnings have not been adjusted to reflect vehicle down payment, vehicle loan payments, or business expenses like cleaning, parking, maintenance, damage claims, depreciation, or other costs.

  3. 3. As of April 3, 2024.

  4. 4. Liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle. For questions or information about the third-party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 / claims@turo.agency.

For questions about how damage to a host’s vehicle is handled, visit https://support.turo.com. Liability coverage is $750,000 for all host protection plans, except in some states and at some airports that require additional coverage. Hosts who provide their own commercial rental insurance do not receive Turo coverage for their vehicles or their customers. All hosts outside of the USA, UK, and Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec in Canada must have commercial rental insurance for their customers.

  5. 5. Turo is not an insurance company, and contractual reimbursement for physical damage to your vehicle is not insurance. Turo will reimburse hosts for eligible physical damage costs in excess of the deductible, subject to terms and exclusions, for the lesser of the cost of repair up to the actual cash value of the vehicle or $200,000. All listings with total market value of $125,000 or more must provide proof of an active manufacturer-installed tracker. Details here.

When a trip is booked in the state of Washington, physical damage to the host’s vehicle is covered by insurance purchased by Turo, but Turo’s insurance does not change the contractual responsibilities of hosts or guests with respect to physical damage to a host’s vehicle. Hosts who provide their own commercial rental insurance do not receive a protection package, nor do their guests.
